Changing transmission fluid on a 2009 Honda Civic?

I just bought a 09 Civic with 60,000 miles in it. Should I change the transmission fluid? It's dark and I don't believe it's ever been changed since the previous owner was an old lady. I also want to put DW-1.

Yeah, you're about due.

It's YOUR car now. You can change anything you want.

Drain the fluid in a catch container and put the same amount back. Top off if required. Use the RECOMMENDED fluid in the manual. Do NOT use a universal transmission fluid.

It's a good idea. It costs very little compared to a transmission rebuild. I don't know what DW-1 is, but it's a good idea to add some Lucas Oil Transmission Treatment.

I assume it is an automatic transmission. It should be changed every 30K miles, according to enthusiasts, but the Honda maintenance schedule (first source) says every 60K miles. DW-1 is the only Honda approved fluid.

Honda warns never to flush their transmissions. The scheduled service is a drain and fill; many enthusiasts do it three times about 100 or more miles apart to do a more complete change (not a bad idea if the fluid is dark). I always thought triple changes every 30K miles was a bit much, though. Single changes every 30K miles makes more sense.

EDIT - I doubt the original Z-1 fluid is available anywhere… You have to update to DW-1.

If that car has the CVT transmission don't do anything to it yourself. Go to the dealer so there are records it was serviced properly. The has been so much trouble with CVT transmissions that many car manufacturers have given extended warranties to cover replacing them if they were serviced properly.

Hi so the best thing you could do is let HONDA DEALER service it.
