Cost of oil pan replacement too high?

2001 Honda Civic with 225,000 miles. A few months ago, while having it in for an oil change, I was told by the service advisor that it needed a new oil pan as about half of the the threads had been stripped. They quoted me roughly $600. Why so high? What factors into this cost? Pricey parts/long labor? Or is it just the dealer being a little money-hungry?

Because that car suck

A very common problem on Honda's but never go back to that thief. There are several ways to repair it, you can get over size drain plugs, drill and tap for a larger thread, or even replace the pan but none of these options even cost half that much.

Labor. It isn't an easy job on many cars.

However, I would get a second opinion from another shop before spending any money.

Just get an oversize plug.

Don't go back to that mechanic, he is a crook. As previous answers stated, there are other solutions. The biggest problem is that the mechanics are using power tools to get your cheap oil change done in minimum time, you get what you pay for.

I recommend waiting til you have an oil leak, just look for spots under the car. Then look to fix it. Who knows, it might be another 50,000 miles

I've repaired hundreds of oil pan drains. Should never cost over $30.00.

  • My 1977 Honda CB400F oil pan cracked? I'm having trouble finding a new one. I was wondering if there are other years that are compatible or if there's just a good way to fix it.
  • Motorbike insurance at £2000 - too high? I just bought a Honda CG 2002 124cc bike. I have a CBT. I have no NCB and have not driven a car or bike before (but have had a provisional license for 5 years). I live in London. The bike will be kept in a driveway and used for commuting to work. Given all of this, the lowest insurance quote I'm getting is £1780 p/a on any of the major comparison websites. This seems very high or is it about right?
  • Oil Change: Honda Motor Oil Vs Generic oil, does it make a difference? I have been getting oil changes with Honda motor oil for 15 years on my 2002 civic that now has 132K miles. If I switch to a generic $10 oil change garage shop will it still be ok? I know the Honda filters are better then the cheapest generic ones but how about the actual motor oil?
  • Is my finance charge too high? I have a 627 credit score so the lowest APR I could get was 10.99% The car I bought was used a 2012 Honda Civic EX w/ 21k miles and it was listed at $16,500. I put in $1500 down and when I saw my financing details, my amount financed was $18,849 and my finance charge was $6,975. I now have to pay $338 for 72 months. I didn't want to go through with the deal but my dad said I couldn't do much with my credit score so I went through with it. Did I get screwed in this deal?
