Disabling airbags before parting out?

I have a 2001 Honda Civic that I'm parting out, should I be concerned about an accidental firing when dismantling, how can I disable or if best acitivate them all. I don't really feel like getting slammed in the face when I remove the steering wheel or something. Does me unplugging all the sensor completely open that system?

To be totally safe, you might want to check with your Honda dealership.

Unplug the sensors and drain the capacitors.

Unplug the connector below the dash and wrap the end in aluminum foil.

Disconnect the earth (US=ground) cable from the car battery which is the black cable and then disconnect the live (red) cable.

Leave the car for a few hours to allow any residual charge on any components to dissipate. Some people use a belt and braces approach and then connect the red and black cables together to ensure that any remaining charge is totally dissipated but I've never found that to be necessary.

You can then safely remove the airbags, but as they are still pyrotechnic devices make sure that you wear eye protection and touch some of the bare metal of the car body just before you remove any airbags as that dissipates any static electrical charge you may be carrying.

If you ever do this on a car you are not scrapping, then never reconnect the battery until ALL the airbags are reconnected as that can set an error code and warning light which needs a special dealer reset tool to clear, and when you reconnect the battery you must always connect the live (red) cable first.

Leave the car alone. The junkyard will take care of the car.

Isn't this a pretty unlikely scenario? Who would want your old steering wheel? If you're really scared of the airbag, just unplug the battery when you get anywhere near it.

Those removing the steering wheel know about the airbag and probably want the airbag contained so they would have be more informed than you on how to take it off without activating it. So that is their problem… Their loss.
