Do i have to replace struts and shocks at the same time?
2004 Honda Civic EX Sedan 1.7 Vtec Automatic
I know that shocks and struts need to be replaced in pairs (the two in front or the two in back).
My questions is: Can I just have the two front struts replaced or should I get the two front struts AND shocks replaced?
That car has a tendency for shocks in the back to weaken and cup the tires back there. Then when you rotate you feel it on the front. I would do them all and be GTG for years.
Struts and Shocks!
No you don't have to. I replaced my front ones three years ago. Haven't gotten around to the rear yet.
You can either have the "shock" portion replaced, which is cheaper as far as parts go, or the complete strut assembly. If you have basic tools, you can do that yourself, although replacing a pair shouldn't cost you more than an hours labor at a shop. If you want to just replace the shock, I would gladly pay a shop to do it. That requires compression of the spring and a potential catastrophe if it escapes the compression tool.
It's a single assembly. The "strut" is a shock absorber, surrounded by a coil spring. If you're replacing a strut, you get new shock absorbers in the deal.
(I suppose it's possible to disassemble the strut, and just replace the shock absorber, keeping the spring. I don't know if anybody actually does this. It's probably not worthwhile from the labor cost viewpoint.)
You can change the shocks. Let a Honda Dealer change the struts.
Honda Civic 2000 on has 'macpherson strut' which incorporates the shock, spring and strut in one unit. The shock is the strut.
- My car is front wheel drive and the rear shocks are leaking will the car last at least two weeks until I can go to a mechanic? My car is Honda 2010 2dr front wheel drive I went to the mechanic yesterday and he told me that rear shocks (not front) were leaking and that I should replace them now or they can cause an accident the thing is he is charging too much and I can get them fixed for cheaper in the city but I'm in college right now and the soonest I can go is in two weeks will my car last that long or is he just trying to scare me into paying As soon as possible the car ride home is like 3hours as well
- How much would it cost to change front struts/ shocks on a honda civic 2001? I think that it would cost no more than or a little over $300 (parts + labor). I went to one mechanic that gave me a quote for $575 ($240 for the parts, the alignment, and labor) lol… Which is ridiculous for a fairly old economy car.
- Both headlights stopped working at the same time? I have a 97' Honda Civic. Driving down the highway both low beam headlights went out. The following day both high beams went out at the same time. All other lights work fine. Fuses are fine and the bulbs are relatively new so I don't think they burned out. I was having alternator problems at the time so I replaced it but still no lights. Does anyone have experience with this sort of thing?
- Are both front struts the same or do they have a Right & Left side label? 2002 Honda civic with 126,000 miles. It's time to finally replace my front struts. I'm buying OEM struts online but do I buy a right & left strut? Or are they both the same/interchangeable?
