Does accidentally going into 1st gear when going 30 MPH damage engine?

I just had manual transmission rebuilt and clutch replaced in 1989 Honda Civic. After exiting the freeway, I started from a stop light, traveling at 30 MPH in 2nd gear. I had trouble shifting into 3rd gear, I thought I had it & when I disengaged the clutch, the engine revved up extremely high. I was in 1st gear! I know this is bad but I was learning my new properly functioning tranny. I immediately put in in neutral, slowed down to 15 MPH and shifted onto 2nd. This happened twice until I learned the feel of the new clutch & transmission. The car is leaking oil. I believe I busted a gasket. Would this cause a lot of damage to the engine or transmission? Car sounds okay & feels okay. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I've heard of people blowing engines with the technique you describe, my friend's wife hit 2nd gear in her BMW at 60mph and the engine ate itself for lunch.

If yours still runs, you may feel lucky. If the engine exceeds maximum RPMs, which it has to if you hit first gear at 30mph, then numerous components in the engine could fail, bearings, rods, valves, cam drive belt, and it is also possible the shock could damage drive shafts, half shafts or transmission.

If it is leaking oil take a look underneath and see if you can see where it is coming from. If it looks like a serious problem, take it to a mechanic and get some real advice.

The wheels would skid before the engine broke.

I don't know about the engine but you could definitely damag the gears by doing that.

  • My 1999 manual honda prelude does not shift into 5th gear or reverse smoothly? My gears are smooth from 1-4 but then takes a lot of effort to go to 5th or reverse. Also when you get out of 5th or reverse it doesn't go straight into neutral like a normal manual car. They still work but it is very annoying that i have to push it into the gears and pull them out. What could the issue be? Transmission? Shift box? I plan on changing to a short throw shifter in the future.
  • Can you drive around a motorcycle in 1st gear the city? I've read that some sports bikes can do like 80mph before redlining in first gear. Could i ride a sports bike around the city an never get out of 1st or 2nd gear an ride safetly? I have a automatic 79 honda motorcycle which i like no clutch an have had a hard time riding manual bikes mostly down shifting an locking the rear wheel up. I was thinking of geting a 250 ninja or cbr to learn to shift i live in a city an don't usually go past 35mph
  • Accidentally Took out the wrong engine cap in my Motorcycle while trying to drain the Engine Oil? My Motorcycle is a Honda XRM. I was trying to change engine oil but opened a different screw/cap just beside the engine oil drain.A 5 inch long spring and a rod with holes came out, i put it back the way i think it should be, then opened the Drain cap, drained the engine oil and filled it with new oil. But when i start the motorcycle it sounded like there's something loose moving inside the engine. What is the rod and spring that came out? Is it critical?
  • Accidentally put 89 octane instead of 87? I filled up my grandmas 2010 Honda Fit yesterday and I accidentally hit 89 octane instead of the regular 87 she puts in. Will this harm the engine? She does 100% city driving and has roughly 25,000kms on it if that helps. I should've said otherwise. It wasn't really accidental. The machine said "the grade selected is unavailable" so I pushed 89. Just clarifying.
