Does anyone in Colorado know any cheap ways to get a catalytic converter/manifold exhaust leak repair?
I took my car into Goodyear today and found out I have a manifold exhaust leak and that I need a new catalytic converter. I drive a 2001 Honda Civic LX and am incredibly inexperienced with cars. The price estimate was $883.37 and I was wondering if anyone in Colorado Springs know of a mechanic that will do the repairs cheaper or a mechanic that will install maybe an aftermarket cat converter? If I looked for aftermarket converters, what would I need?!

Sure, there are several local independent automotive centers in CO who will be able to perform the repair for a couple hundred less. Use yelp.com to find 'em.
Go to a small private shop and get a second opinion. I never go to those big franchise chains. They have quotas from the parent company and replace a lot of perfectly good parts. Cat converters don't need to be replaced unless you are failing emittions. They probably want to replace it because of a little rust on it and the huge price markup.
Don't do anything until you get another opinion. An exhaust leak and bad cat would throw some codes.
They are probably only charging a couple hours labor at a competitive rate. The actual part costs $300 MINIMUM, and up to $500.

- Went to get a smog check and i failed because apparently my carbon levels were to high. Does anyone know how i can fix this? They tried to charge me an extra $70 on top of what i had already paid to have them tell me what's wrong with it "diagnostic". If it matters, its a honda civic 90
- Does a Honda civic 2000 waste more has without a catalytic converter? I have a Honda civic 2000 without a cat and has a pipe instead, it needs the secondary oxygen sensor. But I was wondering if the catalytic converter affects the gas usage an anyway?
- Can I separate a 2000 Honda Civic EX exhaust manifold from its catalytic converter? Just learned that I have a crack in the exhaust manifold of my 2000 Honda Civic EX. I could buy a new manifold with a attached catalytic converter for about $170 but could get a used manifold for $12. I would rather save myself the $100+ by just replacing the manifold. So my question is would I be able to separate the exhaust manifold from the catalytic converter, and switch in a functional but used one?
