Having problem starting my 02 Honda civic?

I have an 02 Honda civic that has always been a reliable set of wheels. It runs like a sewing machine. Until yesterday evening out of the blue I went to the grocery store came back out about 15 min later went to crank the car and the doggone thing began sputtering and shaking like it was bogging down then it died. I tried starting it again but it wouldn't. The engine turns over but would not start. So I sat there for about 20 min it started but sputtered just like before. I gave it gas put the Booger in gear and left. Once I got it down the road it ran smooth like always. When I killed it once I got home it wouldn't crank again. I then waited about an hr then started it again with no sputter. This morning started it and it sputtered a Lil. But now the check engine is on. Anyone please help. I have no idea what in the world had gone wrong with my Lil car.

If the check engine light is on and you can get it to Auto Zone or Advanced, they will run a free scan for you. Then they can look up the engine code and get you pointed in the right direction. It's a start!

Check the following, fuel filter, spark plugs, ignition coils, and starter, and probably distributer cap aswell.
