Help with honda civic smog readiness

I have a 97 honda civic dx model and I'm trying to get it to pass smog. I took for a smog test and everything was good except 2 monitors weren't set yet. I tried to set the readiness using a guide from the honda website. There are 2 monitors that my odbII meter said was incomplete, which was the O2 sensor and EVAP.
All of the others were already set. I ran this twice and nothing changed.
I haven't disconnected the battery in about 1200 miles. There are no error codes or check engine light. I check the readiness daily and its always the same, the same 2 monitors are always incomplete.
Any clue as to why this isn't working or what I should do next? Thanks!
10 points to the answe that helps me get my car ready for another smog!

Battery good, perfect even. Correct operating temperature. I only use factory thermostat on your Honda, aftermarket has caused issues for me too many times. Knowing the exact "enable criteria" for the monitor you are trying to run helps a great deal and varies on different cars. Hard to find info though.
Evap is a tough one because typically requires a cold start, 40 to 80% fuel level then drive cycle. Evap can be skipped here in CA, I think the state realized it was a pain. If you need evap it could take forever.
Ignoring evap I can push all other monitors in less than 20 miles on happy cars. I've found O2 to not always run in a typical drive cycle. I've got several O2 monitors to pass by driving then stopping and shutting down a minute multiple times and by the third stop start when I start back up it passes. I think generally the critiera to pass is quick function after a start up. Hot O2 will get back to funtioning quickly and pass.

Chief right. A loose or bad connector can be the entire enchilada/

Run some marviolus mystery into the gas tank. Fill up put in the required amont drive around for a couple hundred miles all will become useable again. Best of luck

Pay very close attention to the cold start part of the drive cycle. The car must sit over night and the engine block must be the same temperature as the air, which also must be below a certain temperature, early morning should be fine. Start the engine and let it idle for at least 3 minutes before driving and doing the rest of the cycle.
This is when the computer looks too see the 02 sensor's heater come on and it's signal start switching.

  • If car passes smog does that mean the engine and transmission are good? Recently bought a 97 honda and I know it needs a time up. Yesterday when backing up the car got stuck and the steering wheel felt stuck. Will a tune up detect what all is wrong?
  • Moving to LA for 3.5 months. Would I need to get car smog checked there? I heard LA has a high emission standards and I'm moving there for 3.5 months for school. I'm bringing my car there and I'm wondering do I need to get my vehicle checked for emissions? I have a 2014 Honda CR-V. There's not point in bringing my car there if I can't even drive it there.
  • California SMOG Check Changed? Has California changed the Smog Check requirement? Two of my vehicles ('98 Honda CRV and '02 Honda CRV) only did Pass/Fail check. Garage techs did not measure the emission data. Only one car ('98 Toyota Corolla) took emission check. Why?
  • Will this set up pass California smog? I have a Honda civic hatch back and it's missing the whole exhaust system. Thing is their stock cat which is also the header is quite expensive. What if i just get a carb legal header connect a regular cat and regular piping to muffler.
