How many miles do I need for my first oil change on my new 2014 Honda Civic?

How many miles do I need for my first oil change on my new 2014 Honda Civic?

I thought they had a gadget that let's you know when you should have your oil changed. Mine usually said when it is at 15%

4 to 5k miles, under normal driving conditions.

I would do it at 6000 miles and make sure fully synthetic oil is used.

Didn't it come with an owners manual?

On your 2014 Civic, Honda do not specified the miles that between oil change anymore, on page 353 of the Owner's manual shows what Honda newest system calls: Maintenance Minder and the explanation how the system give you a message when the engine oil life is less than 15%. This starts years ago, at least shows on my 2012 Accord.

The maintenance minder system shows engine oil life in the information display to let the owner know when it is time to have the engine oil replaced and regular engine maintenance done. There's no longer a maintenance schedule in the owner's manual. The system shows engine oil life as a percentage, which drops over time as the vehicle racks up miles. It starts out at 100% with fresh engine oil, and winds down to 0%, signaling the oil life is over.

The system counts down oil life based on engine operating conditions (both normal and severe). The on-board computer continuously monitors engine operating conditions such as speed, engine temperature, ambient temperature, time, and vehicle use to determine when an oil change and regular maintenance is necessary.

Besides display the percentage left, All maintenance items are also (in the window) display in code. There are two codes: Main-codes and Sub-codes. Your vehicle will always be due for a main code, and at times for a sub-code. Please refer to your owner's manual, Honda Service History booklet, and the following chart to interpret the code. See my answer to another member for the codes definitions:

So to summarize: The beauty of the Honda Maintenance Minder system is that it automatically adjusts the maintenance intervals based on engine operating characteristics, your driving habits, and the climate that you have operated your vehicle in. For instance, mild highway driving in a warm climate will maximize the interval between required maintenance. Depending on the vehicle, this could be as high as 12,000 miles. On the other hand, short-trip driving in a cold climate may limit the maintenance interval to 3,000 miles or less. In general, most people who combine city and highway driving find that the Honda Maintenance Minder will indicate maintenance needs about every 6,000 miles. Most people maintain constant driving habits; this means that mileage between maintenance will be consistent.

If somehow, you can't locate your manual. Go to this site and download all manual needed and yes: It's a Honda site and it's free:

Change oil when the light on dash comes on with picture of a wrench and oil life is down to 10 percent, regardless of the miles.

And to you it is logical to ask HERE to invisible strangers online instead of reading the car manual or asking at the dealership? Oh, sorry, the teen addiction to texting precludes logical and reasonable thinking. You can't text the book nor the dealership?

Your dashboard will tell you. Also there's a booklet in the glove compartment called a OWNERS MANUAL. Wrap your delicate little hands around it and READ it.

Change it whenever you want, it won't do any harm

Since the engine is breaking in, id go maybe 2500 and change it at that point to be safe.

After 10,000 kilometers. You should change your car engine oils. Its good for the car engine

6000. The light should come on

I'd still change the oil and filter every 3,000 miles. Check the color of the oil on the dipstick. If it's not clear or caramel colored and it's blackish it's past time to change it if you value your motor. All the electronic reminder systems are for people that also like to hear salesmen talk! It's a gimmick for computer freaks that always hate to get their oil changed. If you have a motor with adjustable cam timing (VTEC, MIVEC, etc.) and don't change your oil every 3,000 miles you'll remember this post while waiting for your $1,200 worth of repairs on the cam advance actuators and solenoids!

10000 to 15000

9500 to 15500
