How to get the most money from my almost dead car?

1998 Honda Civic with new catalytic converter, timing belt, hoses… And after spending $1400.00 on it - found out it has cracked ring and needs new motor. However, it IS a Honda and I know its worth something. Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can get the most money out of it - and also please tell me how much I can expect to get - if you know.

I'd like to know how you found out it has a cracked ring? You would have to remove the head at a minimum to find that out for sure. I'd get a second opinion if I were you.

Parting it out sounds good but can take years. Not practical.

If its still running, take it to an auction & sell it as is.

Otherwise call a half dozen junkyards and see what they offer. Then ask $200 more on craigslist.

PS, most of that $1400 is gone.

Your other option is to try & find a used motor & a cheap mechanic. That's probably going to run $1500+.

Sell it Johnny Cash style… One piece at a time. You'll make more money selling the doors, fenders, hood, trunk, lights, transmission, bumpers, etc, than you ever could selling it as a whole car.

Post the details on some Honda forums on the internet saying you're parting it out. Someone will want the bits and pieces for their own project they are rebuilding.

If you were to part it out, you would probably get the most money. You could sell doors, door handles, glass, trans, cat, maybe the timing belt or hoses, seats, battery, dash, radio, buttons, switches etc. Even the Honda emblems.

You could advertise on Craigslist, or sell individual parts on eBay as well.

After most or all of the parts are stripped, you can sell the body and bad motor to the junkyard and get $50-$300 for it.

  • What is the most reliable used car one can get? Your 3 choices? I'm shopping for an inexpensive vehicle that I can use to run around for errands and groceries in an semi urban area. Something economical on gas and good and reliable. I was thinking Honda Civil? What is your thought on that?
  • How to get dead motorcycle into pickup truck? My Honda Shadow broke down on the interstate on a flat surface on the median. Costs a ton to tow it and I just need to get it into my truck and I have a motorcycle ramp. This things heavy. Any ideas getting it in? The motorcycle ramp is a little steep so even with 3 people I think it'd be too heavy to push in. Any ideas? Has anyone ever used a come-along? They only have 6 feet of cable so would you need 2 and then winch it in?
