How to start a frozen car?

It's cold out and my car won't start at all it won't even make noise when I turn the key I don't know how to jump start and there's not even any other car to jump start it with is there any other way to start with out jump starting it? I can't even get the hood open I don't know how it's a Honda 2012 civic please help I don't think it has one of those block heaters either

You are assuming that all or part of it is frozen - if any vital components are frozen, particularly the engine coolant then it will have to be thawed out slowly and carefully and then any permanent damage assessed
Could be that only the cars battery has failed in which case a jump start might work or its a new battery.
Sorry but without heat to thaw it and and/or more electrical power then its not going to start.

Your options are pretty limited if the battery is dead. You either need to jump start the car (see below), replace the battery with a new one, or find another way to charge the existing battery until it can start the car.

I don't know if you have any other way to get somewhere like a nearby Wal-Mart or an autoparts store etc., but if you do they'll usually sell jump starters that plug directly into an interior lighter socket / 12v power socket to jump start a car that way. I'll admit I've never used one of them so I can't testify to how well they work, but it might be worth a try in your case. You can always return it if it doesn't work.

Short of having one of those lighter socket jumpers, I wouldn't recommend that you try anything else yourself if you're admittedly unfamiliar with what's under the hood. If you still have free roadside assistance through Honda, you can call them and have them jump start the car. If you don't have free roadside assistance, any towing company can send a truck out and jump start the car for a small fee.

You can charge the battery, with a battery charger, through the cigarette lighter, or you can probably get under the car and connect to the battery cable at the starter and engine block for ground.

A block heater won't help your dead battery. And now is not the time to wonder if you have one.

What exactly is the outside temperature (not the wind chill)?

Turn your headlights on. Do they work? If yes, your battery is not dead. Try putting the shifter in neutral and starting.

HI, the car is not frozen the battery is just dead or the starter is bad. You well need a jump start or a new battery. The hood should have a handle inside the car at the bottom of the dash. It should say hood or have a picture of the front of the car with the hood open. There well also be a safety catch you well need to move at the front of the hood to finish opening it.

They are jump starters that will work through the cigarette lighter between cars. But without opening the hood, you pretty well have to have it towed to a warm garage or wait until spring

Hi so a 3 year old car will need a new battery that is the problem as most car batteries have life of 2-3 years and living in such a climate where it gets so cold this shortens a batteries life. Batteries being chemical devices severe cold does effect them and now at the end of it's working life. The car will need a new one. So just call out a honda dealer he may get it started but you will still need a new battery.

Are you SURE that your COOLANT IS OKAY in there! You may have to tow it to a NICE WARM SHOP to THAW OUT! It is DANGEROUS if you can't open your own hood! FIGURE OUT HOW TO and DO IT! IF you have LOW coolant concentration, the WHOLE ENGINE a=can SWELL with ICE as it is the only fluid I know of that EXPANDS as it freezes, a property of H2O! As it does so it can CRAMP an entire ENGINE BLOCK or even CRACK IT or cause your FREEZE PLUGS to p[op out and leak COOLANT every where! <<CAL A TOW TRUCK or get ANYONE that knows even a SMALL bit about how engines work to look it over for you! SHAME ON YOU if you get ENGINE DAMAGE on a car THIS NEW! IT will be All YOUR FAULT! HOW MANY MILES? Call the HONDA DEALERSHIP and get them to help you if you still have a WARRANTY on it! GOOD LUCK! OPE for the BEST for you, but JEEZ learn from this, Please!

  • My 1983 Honda nighthawk 650 won't start with the electric start? I recently replaced the ignition coils because the old ones were getting heat soaked and the bike would die, however now the bike won't start with the electric start it turns over fin and the starter sounds fine but it won't start occasionally it ll start when it's cold or try to but I've been having to bump start it in order to ride it. So what's making it do this? Could it be the kill switch? Or something else?
