I'm 14 years old and I have $1000 of my own money to get a 98 Honda Civic from a private dealer. Is there an age limit to buy a car?

Answer As soon as possible.

Added (1). I know how to talk down the price too, though that'd be beside the point -- I'm going to use this car as a project vehicle until I'm legally allowed to drive.

Added (2). To clarify, yes my parents will accompany me at a private owner.

Added (3). Or, would I be able to purchase a car from a private owner without a parent accompanying me?

Added (4). I know I can't legally drive it, however I plan on putting this time to rebuild some of the parts that need to be worked on, that way by the time I'm 16 I don't have to deal with replacing parts.

You can't buy a car at 14 from a dealership. You have to be 18. You can buy from a private party or have a parent accompany you.

Yes. You can't have a car title in your name until age 18 and you can't drive one until age 16. The car would have to be in your parent's name. And whether you can repair and restore the vehicle depends on your knowledge of auto mechanics and exactly what is wrong with it.

This varies from state to state. Most states prohibit entering into contracts and owning property outright until you reach age of majority. Age of majority varies markedly from state to state. Some states permit ownership at age 18 and do not permit contracts until age 21, some permit ownership at age 18 and allow entering contracts at age 18, some require age 21 for ownership and contract entering. Some have limits as well. Check with your state. By the way, I would not, at your age buy a car as you can't drive it legally anyway.

You do not have to be of legal age, or a license driver, to own property, including an automobile. So yes, you can buy the Civic if you can, and only if you can, pay for it in whole with cash.

If I had a vehicle for sale, I wouldn't sell it to a minor. A 20 year old, $1000 Honda will be a money pit.

Nope, a 3 year old can buy a car, but once you do you will need it to be registered and insured which will be hard

The only way that vehicle is worth buying is if (1) it has very low mileage and (2) passes a mechanics pre purchase inspection… If those 2 are not met, then look for something else besides a 20 year old vehicle

All dealers are private. You won't get a 98 Civic for $1000 from even a private party. Dealers won't sell to anyone under the legal age. A private party might but they should not.

You can't buy a tag until you are 18+ either.

Keep saving and get your parents permission. You are going to need it.

Yeah, you have to have a valid drivers license to purchase a car. You aren't even old enough to have a permit yet.

There's no such thing as a private dealer. You're either a registered dealer with a valid business license to buy and sell vehicles to the public or your not. Even if this person sells you the car illegally the state won't allow you to register or title car in your name. If it's not registered in your name you can't buy insurance for the car either.

  • Arkansas motorcycle engine size restrictions for age limit? I'm about to turn 16 and am thinking about getting a motorcycle. It says an MD license is for riders 14-16 and restricts them from having a bike with an engine greater than 250cc. Well the M class license allows for I bigger bike for ages 16+. Am I legible for the M class? Do I need to take certain classes/test to get M class instead of MD class license? I'm wanting the new Honda CRF300 ABS. I really need to know everything and the websites I find don't help.
