If I have an oil leak should I continue to use Synthetic oil?
I have Honda civic 1997 lx sedan, I have an oil leak on the left side of the engine. By the distributer.
My question is, is it worth using synthetic oil even though there's a leak? Or should I just use conventional oil because there's a leak?
First you need to fix the leak. Then you can put in any oil you want.
Because sin oil is so expensive, why not see why the "trucker" leaks in the first place and how much to fix? It may be something simple… Because I can't think of anything by the distributor that leaks oil except the distributor. That would be a rubber "O" ring. Or the valve cover gasket.
Not sure why you're using synthetic in that car in the first place, but you really need to get that oil leak fixed. It's a really inexpensive repair. About what oil to use: It doesn't really matter which except to your wallet.
With respect you would just add to the problem. Fully synthetic oil is worth every penny, even with a leak. I guess you are American from 'sedan'. Have a look in Wal-Mart as in the UK, Asda (part of Wal-Mart), sell fully synthetic oil at half the price of branded oil. It is to full specification too.
If you have been using synthetic continue to do so. The fact that you have a leak has no bearing on what type of oil should be used. Have the leak repaired.
FIX LEAKS THEN BUY EXPENSIVE SYNTHETIC OILS.
- Why do people get mad over the fact that their cars require full synthetic oil? I work as a mechanic and found some people do not like the fact 2010 and up toyotas and Hondas and almost all 2014 cars and European cars require full synthetic oil. A majority of the anger comes towards toyotas and Hondas. Despite me explaining the increased intervals, they still get angered at the fact. Is it just me or does less time doing oil changes that save you more money in the long run end up coming out cheaper despite the increased price and why would they be angry saving money?
- Is going from synthetic oil in my '03 HOnda Hybrid to regular oil bad? Over 100K miles, always used synthetic oil. Took the car to my mechanic to have brakes checked, and he thought the oil looked dirty so he drained it and put in regular oil. Now I'm concerned about my engine. Advice please? I do not know what kind of regular oil he put in.
- If in the owners manual it says I should use 5W-20 motor oil, can I use 10W-40 motor oil instead? I have a 2009 Honda Fit. I just recently bought 10W-40 and when I got home to put oil in the manual said 5W-20. What's the difference? And is it okay if I still use the 10W-40?
