Is it bad to the health of a car to use the parking break while at a complete stop while I'm still in drive (automatic)?

Example: I'm driving and I come up to a construction scene. One side of the road is closed and they consequently halt traffic for that both sides. Then a guide vehicle moves one lane and then comes for the other. This can take over five minutes while completely stationary. I frequently pull my parking brake while still in drive, however only while at a complete stop with my foot depressing the brake pedal. Once the parking brake is engaged I release the foot brake.

Is this bad for the health of the car? I leave it in Drive so that when traffic begins moving again I can simply disengage the Parking Brake.

Yes, its bad.
You should be putting the car in Park if you think you'll be stopped that long.

Yes, and it's also not needed…

Why don't you just push down the brake pedal? Or just put the car in park? Your logic isn't that great. It's not bad for the car but the parking brake only locks the back tires so it's not as safe

No, but I'm not sure why you don't just put it in park. That's what most people do.

The only way it might be detrimental is if you forget to take off the parking break and start driving with the parking break still on.

You're not hurting the parking brake - but sure isn't good for the transmission to idle for prolonged periods in Drive (can overheat transmission - put it in Neutral or Park if you're going to be sitting for more than a minute or two).

Leaving the Car in Drive for an extended stop is probably not the worst thing you could do to your car, but it is also not a good thing. With the engine running and the transmission engaged, there's a heat buildup from the friction in the Torque converter. Since the car is standing still, there's not an efficient air flow to remove that excess heat. It would be better to put the transmission in Park while waiting.

Why don't you just put the transmission into park. That would be a much better and much more logical idea. Then when traffic moves again you simply put it into drive again.

You should use your emergency brake every time you park. It doesn't matter if you're on a hill or a flat parking lot, whether you drive an automatic or manual transmission, or whether the weather is pleasant or inclement. As the name suggests, you should also use your emergency brake in an emergency. If you can't stop…

If you have Neutral as an option put it there id using the parking BRAKE (not break)

If you're waiting 5 minutes, shut the engine off, put the car in park and apply the parking brake.

  • What to do when you leave a note when you hit a car in the parking lot? So my sister was learning to drive in my car she doesn't have a license and I don't have insurance. She hit the side of a parked Honda where I live. I left a note with my name, number, time, and that she was learning how to drive, I don't have insurance and that I would pay for the damages. They contacted me two days later saying hi, you left a note on my car about hiring my car. How should I respond?
  • Sometimes the car does not stop when I brake but it feels like it's hard to stop, is this a rotor issue I'm afraid I will rear end someone? It happens every once a while I'll press the brakes and it won't stop like a jumpy feeling is this rotorsrelated? 2001 Honda Passport
  • Why is it that some husbands let their wives drive luxury cars while they drive ordinary cars? I've been observing some of my neighbors (one of them is a stay at home mom) and the husbands drive ordinary cars like Honda Accord or Honda Pilot. But the wives tend to drive luxury cars like Acura TSX or Acura RDX (some form of luxury car). What is the reason for this? Why do wives get to drive luxury cars while the husband drives ordinary car? I should say some of them. Its not a problem though but was only curious. The neighbors are Asians actually.
  • I bumped a car while parallel parking? I bumped a car while parallel parking. It was a tight spot so i though i had enough space but i really didn't. The car was not damaged because it was a very light tough. My question is how can i know if a car will fit into the space? I drive a honda civic so i'm wondering how big the space has to be to get in? I have no problem parallel parking but sometimes the parallel parking space confuses me.
