Is it safe to tow 1500 lbs trailer on a 2009 Honda Civic LX?

We're travelling to NY from FL trip during new year and all my family are going to live there. Renting 5 x 8 cargo trailer from uhaul while the empty weigh 900 lbs.

We have 5 people, our 2 puppy, luggage in the trunk and roof rack. And last bunch of family items in the trailer.

Added (1). Btw, I forgot to mention to add more details that pulling 1500 lbs on trailer isn't that heavy to me like I could move my hands. I know this exceeds weight on 1k lb limit, and I want to know if this is safe or not even if is overloaded. Because I know the people who overload their car and successfully made it to their trip.

Check your owner's manual for the towing capacity given everything you are going to have in the car. I think you are overloading the car.

Civics are not rated to tow at all.

Given that you've got 5 people in the car, plus luggage on the roof and in the trunk, no, it's not safe at all, at least not above 55 mph. It's also going to be very hard on the tires, transmission, cooling system, and the brakes. I can't recommend it in good conscience. If you really care about the safety of your family, it would be easier and far safer to rent a Uhaul or Penske truck and drive separately. Don't be such a cheapskate. Your Civic is only rated for 850 pounds of people, cargo and fuel. Adding another 1500 pounds in tow is asking for disaster. If your family knew how risky it was, they probably wouldn't want to go. Just because you knoiw other people who have done it successfully doesn't guarantee your own good luck. At minimum, I'd send the others down on a plane, train or bus while you drive by yourself and only risk your own neck. Ever heard of the Darwin Awards? You'd qualify.

Assuming you have a DrawTite hitch, the hitch can handle 2000 pounds, 200 pounds downward.
That U-Haul 5x8 is 900 pounds, and they charge big bucks if you take it one way.
A Harbor Freight 4x8 trailer weighs under 200 pounds, far less weight to tow.
Towing a trailer, you can keep your speed down to 55 mph -- or risk killing your car.

Not rated to tow but I've seen it be done before. A small utility trailer can be towed safely as long as you don't go too fast.

It's defiantly gonna kill your car sooner or later but I've seen people do it and their cars still work fine.

I think i would rent a pick up and haul most of your stuff in it, plus 3 of the people.

I wouldn't recommend it. Towing capacity is usually determined by a combination of the frame, motor, and transmission specs. If you do, then your Honda Civic should be adapted with the proper tow package - costing more than this move worth in most cases. I'd recommend renting a truck than can make the move in one or several trips. Possibly towing the Honda behind it if it is a long trip or have a separate driver.

Many years ago, I bought a used 71 Ford Pickup delivery truck rated at 1/4 ton capacity, but I used it several times for up to a ton. I learned the truck gear ratio had been mechanically altered to exceed it's factory specs for heavy loads.

  • Should I get an 87 Honda rebel for 1500 or a 15 Honda rebel for 4100? Both will have same insurance rate. I know the older one will have more problems to fix but is cheaper up front while the newer one cost more now but will have less problems in the future. Also in case you are wondering the 87 is a 450cc and the 15 is a 234cc.
  • 2009 Honda Fit or 2009 Honda Civic? My grandma is getting a new car. She has had a black 1995 jetta for years now. She wants to get a honda. What would you think would be good for an old lady? Should it not be a honda?
  • My 1997 Honda Civic Ex idles between 1500 and 2000 rpms? My car is a manual and it is always between 1500-2000 rpms when I put the car in neutral, I could be driving it for an hour and it would still be idling between 1500 and 2000. What is the reason for this and how much would it cost to fix?
  • Is a 2000 Honda Civic at $1500 a good deal? I'm trying to buy this car and it seems good expect the guy who is selling me the car says it needs front breaks and it need the carburetor clean should I buy?
