Is Replacing my own CV Axles on my 93 Civic possible with little experience?
I'm sort of on a budget and plan on taking a road trip soon but before I do, my CV joints on my 93 Honda Civic both need to be replaced. I wanted to know the difficulty of this Job and tools needed. Is this manageable for someone who's never replaced axles before? If it's not too hard i'll attempt it myself
To go along with JetDocs answer:
Tools. You need tools. And not just some simple $10 'handy man' tool set either.
I think just trying to get the axle nut off will sway you to pay someone to do it for you.
Agree with JetDoc: lots of lifting the whole car and dismantling with special tools before you get to the easier part of replacing the shafts and joints. Then you have to put it all back together right or the wheels will literally fall off! Tire and suspension shops have the lifts and tools all ready to go, so they can do the job quickly and correctly for much less time and effort than you will need to put in this first time.
Good for you asking the question BEFORE the road trip and before taking parts off to make the car undriveable.
If you have no experience working under your car, then I suggest you pay someone else to do this job. It's NOT that difficult to do, but it involves lifting the front of the car and working underneath it. NOT something you should attempt in your driveway or garage.
There are guides on youtube with people doing this job step by step, a lot of components have to come apart, and then go back together, it can be done, but it is kind of a big job.

I'm 6'1 152 pounds, base on what I told you will you recommend the kawasaki ninja 300, the Yamaha R3, or the Honda cbr500r?
