Is a Jeep Wrangler a good first car? Or Honda Civic?

I'm a 19 year old girl and looking to purchase my first car very soon. I take my license test in about 2 1/2 weeks (late, I know) and I'm debating between the Jeep Wrangler and a Honda Civic. I'd most likely get an older Jeep Wrangler (2007-2013) and I would get a newer (2016) Honda Civic. I love both a lot but am wondering which one would be a better buy for me. Thoughts?

The Wrangler is bad choice in general, just not practical for lots of reasons. And is really bad choice for a fist time driver due to rollover risk and handling is more difficult for a new driver.
So if only those two choices the choose the Civic.

If you do have to have an SUV, then look at Subaru, or a Kia Sportage, or Jeep Patriot.

Wranglers are lifestyle cars. You don't buy them if you care about money or safety, because they are one of the more expensive vehicles to buy new or used, they get the gas mileage of a pickup truck, and are only nominally safer than a motorcycle. The upside of a Wrangler is that the market for parts is huge, so if something breaks it's easy to find the parts you need without relying on OEM. Downside, from what I recall, is that several of those model years are notoriously prone to needing repairs. But if you just have a thing for being a Jeep chick… Well you can't be a Jeep chick in a Honda, can you?

Upsides of a civic are (1) reliability; (2) cheap to maintain and repair; (3) cheap to insure; (4) great gas mileage; (5) safe, at least for a compact car, and (6) very affordable. Downside is it isn't a lot of fun to drive.

The wrangler is a fun and cool car for a first car. With that comes bad safety and big responsibility. The Honda is definitely more reliable and realistic.

  • Jeep wrangler vs jetta tdi? I've had my loyal honda for 7 years. Sense it is on its way out I have been looking into different cars. I would like something I can attach a small trailer to and haul my two quads. I've been looking at the 2011 jetta tdi and the 2005 wrangler (4.0). I drive a lot so I prefer something that is good on fuel. I also want to haul my quads. Would the jetta be good?
  • Is the new Jeep Cherokee good off road? Specifically the base Sport model with FWD. I know it's not gonna be rock crawling or mud bogging, but with a good set of all terrains, could it handle occasional dirt roads/trails/wet grass? Do the base models have under body protection? I mean I could just buy a Honda CR-V or Toyota Rav4 if it's at the same level. What about a Cherokee sport with 4WD? Would it be any better?
