Just did NCT(equivlent to MOT) and I failed on 1)Front suspension Ball Joint- Dust Cover & Locking Device?

I just did my NCT today and it failed on two things:

1) Front suspension Ball Joints- Reason: Dust Covers<-- that is the only answer given to me on the sheet. No explanation

&

2) Front suspension Locking Device- Reason: Missing<--again, that is all that is written down.

I've just lost my job and really can't afford big jobs. I'm in the Dublin area and wondering if someone can help me on this? Are these big jobs? I have looked up other forums but very hard to tell.

From what I gather:
A) The locking device could be something as small as a pin/rivet- but is a mechanic going to make a big deal out of this? How much € will it cost realistically?

B) A lot of people are saying the dust cover can't be replaced, the whole arm needs to be but I can't afford this. It sounds like a huge job. I wasn't told if the dust covers were letting in any dirt (I only know of this because of other forums) so how bad is all this? I did notice noises when hitting bumps in road alright and I guess this is what that was! But is this a bad job? Can the cover be replaced on its' own for little cost?

I drive a 04 Honda Civic SE Class.

Please someone give me advice and hopefully tell me these are minor problems and can be fixed for VERY LITTLE money:-( P.s. No, I can't repair anything myself, I wouldn't have a clue!

Recent changes in the test have meant that damaged rubber covers failing the test have meant that new covers are available from motor factors.
Simple job,
undo the fastener,
pop the taper out and renew the cover then refit,
using a new Nylock fastener.
and that answers both your questions.

Tricky situation research using google that will might help

Yes. You can get just the ball joint boots for about $7 each… HOWEVER… You will probably fin d that you need to half-a@@ take the ball joint apart to put the boot on… So you may want to consider getting the ball.joints replaced while youre at it.
Sorry for the not good news.

Hi i'm afriad this is not a cheap fix this is the track rod ends which need to be replaced and the boots on the end of the steering rack.

  • Where can I buy a 12' open aluminium boat cover and or 9.9 Honda 4 stroke motor cover? I have been looking all over for these two items but have yet to find a set of decent covers. I can find covers for boats but not for a 12' open boat with no window shield. I'm preferably looking for an outboard cover that fits over the whole motor not just the hood.
  • Is my motorbike mot exempt? I have a 1984 Honda MTX 50 motorbike/moped, I know that it is tax exempt however I'm not sure if it is mot exempt, I read somewhere that if it has had no major body modifications or repairs it is mot expemt after 34 years and my bike is 34 years old, if anyone knows would be helpful. This is in the uk by the way

  • Will this front bumper cover fit my car? I have a 2000 Honda Accord coupe, and I pulled it into my garage to work on it, and I bumped into a wall and cracked my front bumper cover. I've been looking and found a few for less than $40 but on the fitnote, it says Sedan. Since my car is a coupe would it fit just the same?
