How long can this car last me?

My brother bought himself a new car and is giving me this one. It's a 1996 Honda Civic xe. Around 110,000 miles. Just got a new brake and new tires. Transmission and other things work just fine. Wondering if I should put a decent amount of money into this car for cosmetic upgrades depending on how long it could last.

Save your money for repairs. Honda is very good and could go to 200k miles

The FIRST thing you need to do is have a mechanic do a complete inspection! Does not matter what it looks like as you can't see internal parts

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of mid-nineties Civics with over 200k miles still on the road. It is a solid and very reliable automobile if properly and fully serviced and maintained. A proven winner.

Overall a good car. They are sensitive to blowing head gaskets if overheated at all. So keep good hoses coolant and water pump in good shape. If it has a manual transmission be sure to keep the fluid full as the sometimes the input shaft bearing will
go bad. Be sure that he has replaced the timing belt if not DO IT along with a quality water pump at the same time.
It should last for many more years If he has not driven like a maniac that is!

I would save the money and use it for repairs if needed. Be conservative on the cosmetic upgrades. Putting $3000 into a car that's worth $1000 just gives you a car that's worth $1,000. If well taken care of, it should last another 10 years or more.
