My car won't move in any gear under its own power but rolls in park while making a grinding noise

I drive a 08 Honda Civic LX automatic. Yesterday I tried to take off from a stop and heard a loud metal snapping sound followed by loud grinding. Then it wouldn t move under its own power in any gear even reverse. It starts just fine, even idles as if nothing s wrong, will rev too. I have to have the emergency brake on because it rolls in park. In park it also makes grinding noises.

Sounds like you need a new transmission.

The one chance you have that you don't need a transmission is if one of the CV joints broke and an axle is spinning in the CV joint. A car can't move when that happens. Ti verify if that happened you need to have a trusted friend start the car, hld their foot on the brake pedal hard and put the car in gear. Then you need to crawl down and look to see if either of the two axles is spinning. If one is spinning you got lucky and only need to replace that axle assembly. Don't try to just replace the CV joint. It's better to replace the complete axle and will likely be cheaper.

One of a couple of things a broken axle or internal transmission problem. Get in the car and start it put it in drive. Step on the gas if speedometer moving but the car won't you have a broken axle. If it doesn't move then a internal problem. Find local shop at ATRA.COM for more help

Sounds like a broken axle. Easy fix compared to any tranny repair.

Could be the selector lever on the transmission needs adjusting(simplest fix)
If it rolls in Park while making a grinding noise then it will go into any other gear and continue to make the same noise. It is TOW TRUCK TIME to any repair shop. Replacing an axle is simple and chances are good you should do both of them otherwise the other axle is soon to follow and you will be in the same situation again.

My guess and wish is that a cv joint broke. Have a look at the axles. Changing them is much cheaper than replacing a transmission.
