My honda overheats above 65 mph?

So, I bought this car a week ago. It was sitting in a garage for about a year. It has 135k on a rebuilt motor. It has the d15b1 motor. It's a 1989 civic ef hatchback. Question being; whenever I'm on the highway or going up a hill, even I my car doesn't have allt of weight and I go to pass, the motor goes hot. Would this sound like a thermostat? I'm running water in it right now.

Sounds like maybe the electric fan is not coming on when it should.

Plugged radiator… Maybe?

James has the first best answer. Radiator is plugged, unless you are losing coolant rapidly (head gasket failure). At 65 mph the fan is not needed. Not the thermostat for the reason Joser gives.

You have tap water in it, right? Tap water is poison to radiators, causing the tubes to become blocked with hard water deposits… Limestone. No flush will touch that stuff. I even tried straight CLR once with no effect. If the radiator is plugged you need a new one, and proper antifreeze (not conventional green, either). How to know? Pull the hoses off the radiator and stick a garden hose in the top fiting. A good radiator will easily pass all the water a garden hose can put out. If it comes back out the top, the radiator is history.

If the thermostat was stuck the engine would overheat sitting still or driving. Put the right coolant in it… Water boils at much lower temp. Then 50/50 mixture. Have your cap checked/replaced. The cap increases the boiling point of the mixture.
It's normal to get hotter under load. But if your temp rises from normal to overheat in a few seconds of acceleration you have a serious problem…

Put coolant In It not water. Water boils way faster than coolant.

So first check the elec fans and the thermostat, the coolant is only "good" for 2 - 3 years, so "flush" the system. If the coolant was really old the dictator and heater core could be flowing reduced amounts of coolant.

Sounds like maybe the electric fan is not coming on when it should. This could be from a relay or sensor not working. Check it or have it checked. Running an engine hot is a big no-no and one of the fastest ways to do harm to it.

  • What are some good cars that either already have mods or are just sporty in general? Nothing above 5k? And yes i have look at all the sporty hondas and i like them, but i want a V6 casue their faster than V4s stock. but yeah like give me some websites or car names to look up on craigslist.
  • I can't go above gear 4 in honda CBF 125 2012? I bought a second hand HOnda CBF124 2012 model two weeks ago. I though these bikes had six gears? I sped up to 45 and gear four is max i could go to. I can't shift the gear lever after that. Why do you think i'm having this problem?> Yes, I know But mine is like 1 up and only 3 up… Can't go any more than that I mean 1 down and 3 up Okay thanks. How much would it cost to get checked and fixed?
  • How long before my bike overheats? I plan on going on a 120 Mile trip tomorrow on a Honda CB300F. It's not the biggest or fastest bike, but it's my first and I was wondering if the bike could possibly over heat or get damaged at all by me staying at about a solid 70 MPH. Everything is stock about the bike
  • Is it normal for a 2011 Honda civic to have loud wind/rattling noises at about 65 MPH? I'm test driving a 2011 Civic. I like the way it drives, but I took it on the highway and when it reaches 65 mph it makes a loud noise it sounds like wind blowing through the left side of the car. The faster I go the louder it sounds. Is that normal. I have been driving the dealer crazy for over a week now.
