Oil Change: Honda Motor Oil Vs Generic oil, does it make a difference?
I have been getting oil changes with Honda motor oil for 15 years on my 2002 civic that now has 132K miles. If I switch to a generic $10 oil change garage shop will it still be ok?
I know the Honda filters are better then the cheapest generic ones but how about the actual motor oil?
Honda just buys & re-labels oil, plus that adds a bit for themselves. So as long as you buy a decent brand, the car will no care.
Honda oil use to be Mobil oil. They just changed to Conoco Phillips. So now Honda oil is packaged by Conoco Phillips. Most manufactures GM.Motorcraft etc.put their oil contracts out on bid every few years and low bidder gets to bottle there oil.
Who Knows what they use at the cheap chain stores. I'd never go to a Jiffy Lube. They've been investigated for not doing the services they charge for since CBS caught hem not doing the work on a hidden camera in one of their vehicles. If you've been going to the same Honda Dealer for that many year speak with the Service Manager and ask for some oil change coupons. If he says he doesn't have any let the owner know you won't be coming back to purchase a new vehicle.
Buy your oil at Walmart. Just like Honda, their oil is major name oil repackaged, and it's much cheaper if you buy the 4 qt or 5 qt bottle. That's all I use in MY Honda.
First, Honda doesn't manufacture ANY oil or filters. So there's really no such thing as a "Honda filter" (even though it's labeled as such) or "Honda Oil". Honda (like every other car manufacturer on the planet) outsources all that to someone. Usually several different manufacturers. So don't at all get hung up on "Honda" anything, because there's no such thing.
The best consumer grade motor oil is Mobil 1 Pure Synthetic. You should always run a full synthetic oil. A quality full synthetic motor oil is good for between 5000 and 10,000 miles between oil changes.
The best pro grade motor oil is Amsoil. If you switch to Amsoil, you can go 15,000 miles between oil changes.
The best oil filter made is the Purolator PureONE. Not the regular Purolator filter. The PureONE. It is better than anything from Fram or Bosch or anyone else. If you run Mobil 1 full synthetic or Amsoil and a PureONE filter, you are doing the best oil change maintenance you can do.
As letmepicyou stated, Honda has NEVER made oil OR filters.
That said, I wouldn't trust anyone offering a $10 oil change, because the oil and filter alone sell for more than that.
Car companies don't make motor oil, they buy from oil companies and put their names on to sell at premium prices.
Don't use oil from dollar general stores
"Honda Oil" is just whatever oil Honda buys and slaps their own label on. Oil is oil.
- How can you make your car very shinylike the cars at the motor show? All the cars including family cars like Honda and Toyota at motor shows are very shiny and look nice. How can you make your car like that? Do you need to use any special paint? What is it called?
- If in the owners manual it says I should use 5W-20 motor oil, can I use 10W-40 motor oil instead? I have a 2009 Honda Fit. I just recently bought 10W-40 and when I got home to put oil in the manual said 5W-20. What's the difference? And is it okay if I still use the 10W-40?
- Difference between $38 5W20 vs $18 10W30 oil change? 2002 Honda civic with 128,000 miles that has used 5W20 for 14 years with the dealer. Finally sick of overpaying. The Honda dealer wants $38 for oil change for 5W20. The local shop offers 10W30 for $18. What happens if I go with the 10W30 if anything? it's not exactly a fresh ride, lol.
- Does a clutch performance make a difference? My clutch is starting to slip so its time to change my clutch. I was wondering if installing a performance clutch makes a different in performances or its just a waste of money. I have a honda accord ex 1996.
