On a scale 1-10 how hard is it to replace a front wheel drive cars axle? And how much for a mechanic?

I have a 1998 Honda Civic that's needs it's front axle replaced. How much (ballpark) would it be to fix it at a mechanic? And also how hard is it for the mechanic to fix it?

Labor guide shows 1.3 hours to do one side. Not bad if you have the right tools. But if you don't this job can go South mighty fast.

On a scale of 1 to 10, ten being the hardest, if you have to ask, it is a 25. If you know what you are doing, it is a 2 or 3. Cost ins primarily labor, which varies considerably from shop to shop, even within a city.

For a competent mechanic with air tools changing 1 axle takes about a half hour. For a non mechanically inclined X-Box playing couch potato without a manual… Never. The axle nut will be the hardest thing to tackle, especially if you don't have the 36MM Socket needed to remove the nut. Releasing the lower ball joint without damaging the joint's seal from the lower A- Arm would be the next thing to worry about. Some jobs are best left to professionals and this maybe one of them. You can go to repairpal.com and get a good ballpark estimate because labor and parts prices vary depending upon where you live.

1 to 10 depends on your ability and tool supply. I don't think it's something most people would want to do. You can probably buy the complete new axle for about $100. And have a local shop install it for about $80. Labor. Honda will want about $350 for everything.
