Sandbags in car for winter?
Wondering if it is necessary or more dangerous to place a sandbag in my trunk for the winter time? I have a front wheel drive honda civic.
Not necessary. Putting sandbags in the trunk is for when you have rear wheel drive and want to get better traction by adding weight to the drive axle. If you have front wheel drive, it's the drive axle failing to pull the weight of the car you should be worried about. Adding weight to the back of a FWD car is actually worse because then the drive axle will be struggling more to pull the weight of the vehicle and the wheels will most likely begin to spin in place. I had a Mitsubishi Lancer and I did just fine with it. They had FWD, except for the Lancer Evolution; that had AWD.
It will make things worse for you in a front wheel drive car.
Sandbags are for the extra weight (traction) over the drive wheels. Get yourself some radial chains instead.
Placing sandbags in the trunk, on a Front Wheel Drive vehicle, will DECREASE your traction and is a very bad idea.
Get winter tires.
Sandbags are okay for pick-ups and such that are rear wheel drive. This helps with putting weight over the drive wheels. However, your Civic is front wheel drive so it already has the engine and transaxle over the drive wheels. You don't need any additional weight in the rear to improve traction.
NOPE, YOU DON'T NEED THEM UNLESS, you think you may need them to spread out for traction.
(NO ONE ELSE ON HERE HAS THOUGHT ABOUT THAT, HAVE THEY?)
- What is the winter button in my car? There's a "winter" button right next to my hand brake, what does it do? My car is a 1999 Honda Passport 2 wheel drive v6, if that's inportant.
- Which car is more ideal for winter conditions We have a 2008 Honda Pilot with 4WD and a 2016 Sedona Front wheel drive. The pilot is all wheel drive however it's in need of a tire change while the Sedona has new tires. Both are on all seasons as we live in an area that doesn't snow, winter tires are not a necessity for us. Which car will be safer for Lake Tahoe weather.
