Semi-automatic car gears?

I have a 98' honda civic with a semi automatic transmission. For drive, there's a D4, D3, and 2.

I've heard multiple things from different people on how a car like this should be driven.

Most of the time, on a regular 40 mph road, I drive in D3. I use D4 when on the highway, and 2 when on roads 30 or slower. (and some people have told me this is how it should be driven)

However, I've also been told that I should keep it in D4 at all times.

I can't seem to find the manual for my specific car online anywhere.

What's the best way to drive my car to get the best gas efficiency and have the least wear and tear on it?

Drop it in D4 and forget about it. There's simply no reason to use D3 or 2 unless you are driving down a mountain slope or crawling up steep gravel driveway. Slap it in D4 and drive.

Honda never made a "SEMI-AUTOMATIC" transmission. What you are describing is a fully automatic trans. When you drive you just stick the lever in D4 and leave it there. There's no need for the driver to shift gears at ANY time.

That is not a semi automatic transmission, it is fully automatic. You don't generally move the lever around while you are driving.

As g said - just put it in D4 - that is the correct selection for 99% of your driving, you would only use the lesser one in certain extreme circumstances as g described.

Read the owner's manual. If you don't have one it might be possible to download a pdf.

  • Honda c50 semi auto multi plate clutch? I have a Honda c50 bike with a wet type semi automatic multi plate clutch. The thing i can't understand is how the engine keeps running while on gear, in a stop, without touching the gear lever which being pressed a little releases pressure from the plates.i'd like some answers concerning the operations of such clutches.
  • 1982 cm250 slipping gears, and not getting the right speed out of each gear? I have a 1982 honda cm250 bike. I recently had the motor rebuilt with new shift forks, etc. I got the bike back and it's doing this issue ( the same issue as when I took it into the shop). I was told that these are common issues with that year motor. I'm having a hard time believing this, as people say it is a great beginner bike.
  • How to count gears in Honda CBF 125? So, Honda CBF 2012 model has 5 speed I know. 1 Down and 4 up. Does the neutral count as speed? So is it 1 down and 4 up with neutral included? 1, N, 2, 3, 4 Gears(is this right?)
  • Honda Amaze automatic or Hyundai Xcent automatic? Which would be better purely in terms of performance, acceleration, smooth and fast gearshifts and handling, i mean the better drivers car. I know hondas transmission and engines are great, but is the hyundai as good too? Even though the xcent has only 4 gears, i.e. 1 less than the amaze, it has tiptronic, would this by any chance improve the driving experience? I sadly don't have the opportunity to test drive these cars.
