Should I get a gti or a civic si?

I recently graduated college and landed my first real job and I'm looking to replace my slow pos 99 Mazda b2500.

I'm looking at used vw gti's between and 2010 and 2012 and Honda civic si's 2012 or newer. Originally I wasn't going to consider the civic as they accelerate slow, don't have a turbo, and aren't hatchbacks. However my dad said I should look at Honda's and Toyotas because they are more reliable, and the only car similar in price and performance is the civic so. The car will be mainly used to commute to work and freeway driving. What do you guys think? Is the GTI really that unreliable that I should go with the civic si

The Civic is a much more dependable car than the GTI. And FYI Honda Civic Si competes well with the GTi. With 201 H.P. It is a runner. Give it a look see.

As far as overall reliability and cost of upkeep the Civic is a far superior automobile.

Get a pre-2008 WRX. Si's and GTIs are way too bloated and heavy these days. If you want to go back to early 2000s I'd recommend the Si just for the forum support and cheap replacement parts. Though VWs are much better looking than Civics.

And while this isn't the question you asked, consider your total costs (premium fuel, full insurance coverage, loan payment) and do some quick math to see if you don't want something much cheaper (2002ish Celica?) over the course of 5 years. You can get a Celica for <$4000, insurance is about half what you'd pay on a newer GTI, and the car payment will be Way less.

Your dad is right about the Civic so you should get it
GTi's are decent but more expensive to repair.

Yes, The civic is the better choice.

But what is wrong with the Mazda? It is 4cyl compact truck that can be useful. Save your money and try to keep it until you can. When your job is stable and you build your credit, then get the car you want.
