Tried to test drive a 2005 honda civic, wouldn't reverse, what's the problem?

I went to test drive a 2005 Honda Civic EX coupe and when i put the stick to R, it wouldn't move. It turns out something on transmission needs to be fixed and it will cost 800-1000 dollars. The total cost would be 6000. Is it a good idea to buy? Has a clean title but needs repair, dealer isn't willing to fix it unless i put down money.

Added (1). has 133,000 miles on it

No, this is not a good idea to buy. Walk away. There are plenty of 2005 Honda Civic's out there that do not have mechanical problems.

Before you purchase any used car, first make sure it has zero mechanical problems. Second, check the Carfax report. Third, ask for and look at the service history and or repair receipts. Third. TAKE THE CAR TO YOUR OWN TRUSTED MECHANIC OR INDIE REPAIR SHOP THAT SPECIALIZES IN WHATEVER MAKE/BRAND CAR YOU ARE LOOKING AT AND HAVE IT INSPECTED!

Run. The odds are their "repair" will only be temporary, and they won't want to hear from you after they have your money.

LOL! Buying a broken car is always a good idea.

If the dealer isn't willing to fix it then nor should you. Stay away.

He's nuts. You can buy a good civic for $6000 with less miles. Don't get ripped off walk away

In my experience people that ask this kind of dumb question usually just go ahead and buy the vehicle anyway after being warned! LMAO! You're going to grab it aren't you?! Just so you can plan… Rebuilt transmissions are a good $1,800 or more plus labor. You might want to call a tranny shop for a quote. I was going to say first but what's the use?
