Added (1). Its like somebody is operating one of those household dimmer switches, and turning the knob from end to end within a second or two. Can you help explain why this is happening?

Voltage charging issue. Your alternator maybe getting weaker.

Bad wiring or bad ground.

You could also have a charging system issue -- bad alternator, bad alternator belt, bad idler pulley, bad belt tensioner, etc.

Bad alternator or grounds.

That is usually a sign of charging problems, but it can also be a missing engine ground. My first thought is the brushes in the alternator are worn out and losing contact, but if so it will stay dimmer within the month and the battery will die while you are driving.

Voltage Regulator issues

Bad connection somewhere.

Hi how about a far degree of body rust which changes the resistance whilst it is making and breaking contact.

The most common reason is corroded or and melted bulb socket connectors that are covered in green corrosion.
