What do i need to do when buying a car from private seller?

I'm buying a 2007 honda civic from private seller, what are the steps to buying a car? This my 1st time buying a car, i'm a college student. I live in WA seattle currently

1. Bring it to a mechanic and get it thoroughly checked before you hand over any money.

2. Ask to see the title. He doesn't own the car unless his name is on the title. You also need him to sign it over to you to so that you're the owner.

After being sure you want it after a long test drive and a mechanics thumbs up, make sure the seller has the title in hand and the name on the front matches his drivers license. (not written in on the back) If it does not, it could be an unlicensed flipper. That could be a concern because if there's a problem, the flipper won't be concerned about correcting things. This kind of thing happens more than you know and you are stuck trying to find the prior owner and get an affidavit from them because the flipper did not know what he was doing paperwork wise.

In some countries there are some people that their work is test the car. Because many of people nowadays reduce the mileage of car to sell more expensive.
These experts test your car include, body of the car, milage, engine, test leaking problems, etc and then give you a report of the cars that you want then you can buy the car without any stress! Sorry my English not very well.

Make sure the seller has a clear title. No liens and no "restored" vehicle. Have a mechanic of your choice inspect the vehicle. Request a Cafax report.

Make sure the car has a clean title and have a mechanic look at it.

Do proper research to make sure the price is reasonable compared to other similar vehicles in your area. Examine the title to make sure it's clean and that the name on the title is the same as the seller's. Take the car on a good long test drive and give it a basic look over for leaks, strange noises, working lights and equipment, signs of damage repairs, water damage, worn tires, and rust. A Carfax report can be helpful. Then, if it passes these steps, finally have the car inspected by a mechanic of your choice. Don't skip this step, especially for an old 13 year-old car.

One more thing, NEVER give the seller money without getting the title at the same time. Accept no promises of getting the title later.

If a seller says, I'll get you the title later, or My Dog Ate The Title, you must understand that means, "I don't even own this hunk of junk. When you buy it from me it will not only be worthless to you, but you will be a receiver of stolen goods. You'll go to jail and they won't be able to find me! Ha ha!"
