What does S stand for in a automatic transmission gear?

My brother has a 2005 Honda civic hybrid automatic and it has
P
N
D
L
S
My question is what does S stand for and what does it do? And can I change it from D into S while am driving on the highway if not can I leave it on S while I drive on the highway for 70miles + ?

The S on some transmissions stands for "sport" I believe it stays in the same gear longer before shifting. Allows for higher revs and a sportier feel. I may be wrong.

I'm more curious as to this car not having a reverse gear…

Haha my bad it also has R for Reverse

S is for 'Sport' which means it just burns a drop more fuel with no noticeable effect.

Your Honda Civic has a CVT transmission. The S does not stand for Sport it stands for Second. You also have the shift pattern wrong. The correct shift pattern on your Civic is:
P
R
N
D
S
L
The S is second and the L is low. Selecting Second shifts the transmission into a lower range of ratios for better acceleration and increased engine braking. Use Second when you are going down a steep hill, or in stop- and-go driving. BTW, you must not have an owners manual of you could have looked this up on page 133 of the manual. Here is an online version for you.

In short: "S" stands for SECOND: By selecting Second shifts the transmission into lower range of ratios for better acceleration and increase engine braking.

You can shift from "D" to "S" but not when you're driving at 70 Mph or keep the "S" on with highway speed. Use the "S" only when you are going down a "Steep" hill or when driving in the "Stop and Go" traffic

For faster acceleration when in "D", "S" or "L", your transmission will automatic "Kick down" to a lower gear (Lower range of ratios) by pushing the gas pedal to the… Floor.

For normal driving: "D" would be the best for everything, including "Fuel consumption" ;-)

  • Is the 1985 Honda CR 500 water pump gear shaft compatible with the 86-2001 Honda CR 500 water pump gear shaft? I have a 1985 CR 500 and the water pump gear shaft broke. It has been discontinued from Honda, and no one else has it. It is a metal gear. The one's for the 1986-2001 CR 500 are plastic. If I have to use plastic, I will. However, I prefer not to. If anyone knows where I can get the OEM 1985 Honda CR 500 gear shaft, I would forever be grateful.
  • Accidentally drove in 2nd gear on highway with automatic. Did I cause any damage to my car? I didn't get much sleep so this morning I was little out of it. On my 15 minute commute to work I accidentally put my automatic car in 2nd gear instead of drive. I drove on the highway for 5 minutes going 60. I didn't notice until I got to work and realized that's why my car felt a little different while driving. It's a 2002 Honda crv. Could I have caused any long term damage?
  • I own a honda civic 99, automatic, gear shift problem? I own a honda civic 99, automatic, when i shift it from parking to Drive gear it will clunk very hard, then it will keep running on high rpm and i feel i doesn't shift to the high gear.
  • Gear shift on automatic is hard to move? I have a 1994 honda civic that my dad's best friend just sold to us. He said he replaced the transmission with a newer one. But recently on startup, it was hard to move the gear stick from park to drive. I needed to wiggle it a bit and I floored the brake to make sure it would change gear. What is the problem? How can I fix it and how much will it cost?
