What is causing my 2002 honda civic ex (Automatic) to barely move in drive and reverse?

My daughter uses this car and was working great one day and then the trans just about quit working. Had to tow it. When in neutral I can hear a high pitch whining sound from trans. Is there any way to fix this. The engine light is also on.

When you have a 16 year old car things will start to break like the transmission. No easy fix for this other than a new transmission.

Have you checked the trans. Fluid to see if its low? And, the codes its throwing need to be read. You will need a obd code reader to do this.

Time to replace the tranny it sounds like!

Let me put this in small simple words that even you should be able to understand… YOUR CAR IS BROKEN! Find a mechanic to fix it for you.

Might be locking torque converter not engaging and/or low fluid. Obvious, first: Check fluid (possibly too late), go to the Zone and have codes read. My Audi lost 2nd, I found a broken spring to a valve in valve body when I checked/changed fluid. I was lucky, that's all it was.

I haven't had an auto since 1991…

That year of Honda had tranny problems.

The engine light could be anything. Only a code scanner can tell you. The first thing to do is check the fluid level in the transmission. Drive the car for a bit to warm it up, park it, turn it off then pull the dipstick. If the level is where it should be, the tranny is toast. You can fix it by replacing it. Around 4 grand

That year Honda suffers chronic transmission failure. They never last much more than 30,000 miles and Honda has no real remedy- just replace the transmission. The engine light is on, but the trouble code is something like P07xx for transmission failure. Ask Honda about the recall and extended warranty for one-time warranty replacement, but I feel like the time for that was up along time ago.

Honda had problems with transmissions between 98-07 find local shop at ATRA.COM for more help. But it will probably need to be rebuilt
