What transmission fluid TYPE does a 2008 Honda Civic lx 1.8l take?

Everywhere I search people just give the same generic answer "amsoil atf" "I use synthetic atf" "conventional is just fine" and that's not what I'm looking for. I'm looking for the dextron/Mercon or h rating or specific type of atf these use. I'll be choosing synthetic anyways, just need to know the type (and how many quarts to buy)

Check the owners manual.

Use genuine Honda transmission fluid which is ATF DW-1. Do not use any other fluid even if some parts store tells you it is compatible. The amount depends on if you drain the pan or if you flush the system. You will need around 3 quarts if you just drain the pan and refill. A complete flush will take around 12 quarts. DO NOT OVERFILL.

Honda and Mercedes are the two biggest PITA when it comes to engineering transmissions and fluids to work in them. The only fluid they recommended in effen transmissions was the Honda branded type Z1. Even though that was the only fluid they approved it still burned up trannys, they quit making it, and now only recommend Honda branded Type DW-1. No other brands are listed as compatible even temporarily.

Castrol thinks their Transmax will work, and AC Delco labels an oil as Z1.

It takes Honda DW-1. Your 2008 was just a couple years past the Great Honda Automatic Transmission Debacle that saw many owners have to replace their transmission more than once so I would not be inclined to cut corners with it.

READ the owner's manual.

Local parts store can help.

I used Castrol Transmax import multivehicle fluid for 6 years. Worked perfectly fine. I drained and filled it very 10000 miles. The drain plug was a 3/8 ratchet drive. It took 2 1/2 qts to refill it.

Go to Advance Auto. They handle a Castrol Import ATF that is compatible with Honda transmissions. Look on the bottle and it will tell you it's for Honda's.
