What type of automatic transmission fluid for a 1997 honda civic?
Honda ATF-Z1 was originally used but has been replaced by the more expensive DW-1. Either will work. Dexron won't hurt it but it will shift harshly.
Check the manual. If you don't have it, give the guy behind the counter at the auto parts store the year, make and model and he will look it up for you.
Use only genuine Honda ATF DW-1 and nothing else. Do not use Dexron which is only to be used in an emergency when you have no Honda fluid available. It will cause rough shifting. Ignore anyone who tells you that you can use another fluid that is compatible. They are wrong, use only Honda fluid.
H code, Hondas use a special fluid that is sold at most parts stores - specify Honda with the clerk
