When should you replace a cars transmission?

My sister has a 2016 Civic EX first 10th gen Civic ever and it has 208,456 KM on it. That is a lot of a 3 about to be 4 year old car. She took it on road trips and going to school/work but I always made her do the proper maintenance at Honda.

But I know its a CVT transmission and they are trash but much better than any stupid American car transmission. So far no engine lights only engine light was when the gas door was forgotten to be closed the car runs really well and she loves it and does not want to get a new car since she bought it in cash

You might want to call the local AAMCO place and find out what they'd charge for a transmission inspection and repair.

One of the things they advertise is that it's often cheaper to let them recondition a transmission than it is to replace one.

Not to mention they do financing so you can pay for the repairs over time.

Don't fix nothing until its broke. Thats the golden rule of mechanics. I've had an american car pushing 400 thou with the original trans, so if the hondas better your in good shape. Alot depends on how easy its driven with anything.

Replacing the transmission fluid and filter is a maintenance item. Replacing the entire transmission is not…

My 1992 Bronco factory transmission is still good with 456,000 MILES on it…

I have only had one transmission failure in 45 years of driving 'stupid American cars'. I keep my cars for 15-20 years but often have multiple cars. I did have a timing belt issue with a stupid Japanese car - 1981 Civic, actually a couple of failures with that car in 110K miles. To answer - don't fix it until it breaks, just do the recommended maintenance - nothing wrong with CVT transmissions on low powered vehicles.

If it's being maintained by Honda, what does Honda say about it? My guess is none. They'll tell you when the time comes. In the meantime, enjoy the car!

Honda owner too. 1996 Civic. Sadly not Honda- serviced so just starting with my second equally old engine and transmission already.

If she's smart she'll replace the transmission As soon as possible along with her stupid brother. She's gotta be as done with you as we're.

You replace them when they break of course.

You should change the Fluid and Filter every 60K miles on a CVT, they will last 200K+ if you do that. A LOT of people don't do it, which is why they have a bad reputation and high failure rate.

That is 130.000miles. I personally would not worry about it. Highway miles are the easiest for the entire car - the engine & the transmission. You go until it don't go no more. That transmission could last 800KM(or even longer) You don't replace what ain't broken… As there's no need for that.
. You WAIT IN ANTICIPATION WITH BATED BREATH FOR THAT DAY TO HAPPEN. Yeah, it may never come.

40+ yr mechanic.
