Why is a '93 Honda Civic cranking but not starting?

I'm trying to diagnose what's wrong with a '93 Honda Civic that had abruptly died in a driveway and would not start back up, although the starteris cranking.

I did some research and have figured it to be an compression, fuel or spark issue.

So far what I've done is listen to ensure the fuel pumping is engaging when turning the key. I've check sparkplug wires for an corrosion, cleans up the sparkplugs although I haven't checked the distance and checked if they spark. I've also cleaned the battery terminals, main leads and tighten them, and checked the voltage output with a multimeter. Lastly I've checked all fuses.

I have an OBD2 reader but I can't use it with the car being a '93 and having an OBD1, I couldn't check for fault codes.

The car apparently died, while in idle I'm assuming, in the a driveway and hadn't started back up. I have plenty of tools but no service manual for the car. This isn't my car so I don't know what maintenance has been done to it and when.

For the make and model of the car what are some ways of diagnosing and troubleshooting to narrow down the cause of the problem? I've read of spraying throttle body cleaner in somewhere and trying to start it, to see if it's a fuel system. What are some methods of checking the distributor cap, wires and sparkplugs to see if they are functioning? What are just some general troubleshooting methods for a problem like this?

I have a basic to intermediate understanding of automobiles but I need help.

Check the fuel and spark before worrying about the compression! First see how much gas is getting to the enone, it might be a dirty fuel filter! Next check for spark at the plugs, it could be the coil or module!

During your research project did they explain why to change the fuel filter before testing the fuel pressure? No doubt you know how to test the fire at the spark plug gaps.

  • Why is my car not starting? I have a 1992 Honda prelude is and I just got it out of the shop today! They replaced the timing belt, head gasket and some other gaskets.
