Why my car keep overheating?

I have a 05 honda civic ex My coolant temperature been going up and down. It did it for the first time Fri night when i got off of work but o drove it the next morning and it drove just fine no problems at all. Then i drove it again Sun and had no problems again, drove it to work today no problems but when i got off of work tonight it was rising again. What could be the problem? It can't be the head gasket could it cause if it was it would be rising everytime i drove or am i wrong? I'm asking cause the head gasket is the worse case so i'm hoping it may be something small. Btw i don't know if this helps but when i get off of work at night i take the highway when i drove to work i take the back roads, that sat morning and sun evening i didn't drive on the highway either. Could that be the issue high speed?

The first thing to do would be to check the coolant level (if you haven't already).

It could be as simple as replacing the thermostat and flushing the cooling system, or it could require a head gasket replacement (at which point you should also replace the water pump and timing belt).

I would suggest taking it to a shop and having it looked at before overheating causes more damage to the engine.

I would bet on the head gasket. Sorry.

Make sure the radiator fans work. If it was overheating because of low coolant, the temperature wouldn't be going down after being up. If the fans don't come on at operating temperature, check the fan relay. Turn on the ac and see the fans run, and that means the fans DO work but the main fan relay is bad. Replace it- $15 plug n play part. Running while extremely overheated can blow a head gasket and cost you a barrel of money to fix.

90 percent chance your thermostat is failing. Cheap fix.

Well you have not looked at the engine or gave us any results from any troubleshooting you have done. The best thing is to see a mechanic because is it not likely you can fix the problem. It could be anything and we will be just guessing.

An air pocket in the cooling system causes that.
If you haven't even checked the coolant level in the radiator you're setting yourself up for a blown headgasket.
It may just be a hose leak or the water pump leaking.

  • I have a 2006 Honda Metropolitan, WHen cold it starts up but i have to keep revving it to keep it going? I have already replaced the battery, air filter, spark plug, did an oil change, got new gas, cleaned out the carb. Once it is warm i have no issues with it. It usually takes about 3 to 4 min of driving it to get it warm but once warm everything is fine with stopping and going.
  • Why my kenwood kdc-148 won't keep the settings saved? I recently installed a new Kenwood KDC-148 radio in my 98 honda civic lx… I have set it so that DEMO MODE is OFF, and changed the time on the unit to the correct time, yet everytime I switch off the engine it resets. I have all the speaker wires hooked up which leaves me with a blue wire and a brown wire that's not in use and my red and yellow wires that powers the radio are hooked up to the red and yellow wire coming from the car harness! Can't seem to find the memory wire!
  • Why is my car overheating? - 2 Back in June, my 2002 Honda Civic began to overheat every day. Repair shop put a new thermostat in and it ran perfectly. Problem solved! Or so I thought. It ran fine for about 6-8 weeks. Then it started overheating again out of nowhere. Another new thermostat was put in, thinking the old one may have been defective. My car ran fine for another 6 weeks or so and then it started to overheat again out of the blue. What the heck? Repair shop is puzzled.
  • Why is my car overheating? - 1 I just replaced my thermostat in my 95 Honda civic, it fixed the problem for a few hours but when I went home and let it sit for a few hours and got back into it, it overheated within 5 min. I checked the oil, coolant, and there was plenty. However my fan was not turning on, and my heater was cold. So I wired the fan to the battery only because I needed to make it home and it turned the fan on but it didn't stop or fix the overheating. The fuses are good too… Please help!
