Why my Temperature gauge keeps going up and down?

I have a 05 Honda Civic EX, my temperature gauge has been going up and down. I thought that maybe it was the thermostat and had it replaced but I'm having the same problem. It actually has got worse when I'm driving the gauge goes up but when I let off of the gas it goes back down but once I start pressing the gas it will go up again. When i'm at a complete stop it goes up slowly too, i notice when i have the heater on once it starts blowing cold air the temperature raises. I checked the coolant and its fine so that's not it.

Suspect you have an air bubble in the cooling system - it needs to be bled properly.

Fluctuations are normal. As long as its not running hot, its not a big concern.

At a complete stop temps rise because the air is not cooling the radiator. Totally normal.

Unless you mean big changes, you may not have anything to worry about. (but I'm not a mechanic)

You have an air pocket in the cooling system. Take the radiator cap off and run the motor for 15 minutes. Watch for air bubbles coming out of the radiator neck. You'll over heat the motor with out knowing it! The temperature gauge is not accurate when you have air in the cooling system and that is a sure sign there's an air pocket.

There's a large air pocket in there which should be all coolant. Start the car and let it idle for 15 minutes with the rad cap or upper tank cap off and have the coolant filled in the upper tank to the top. 15 minutes should open the thermostat and all the air should bubble out as it is replaced by coolant. Meaning in the end you need to add more coolant to top it up. Now screw on the top tank lid on tight and it should not be a problem anymore. If you can't figure it out tell a mechanic what your problem is and he will know what to do because it is HIS TRADE.

Take a look at the cooling fans to see if the don't come on. More heat as you stand still but cooling off when you move is a strong indication of this. Usually a bad fan relay causes this problem. Good luck. It shouldn't take all weekend or a barrel of money to fix this yet. If you fry the engine, you WILL end up paying a couple of grand to fix it. Fan relays are $15-$20 and plug n play.

Have the sender replaced, not just the gauge.

Flush the coolant and go from there.

  • Power steering fluid keeps going below minimum level in my 2015 Honda Pilot? Hi, I drive a 2015 Honda Pilot which I bought in June of this year. Since then, I've had to refill power steering fluid 3 times because it falls below minimum level after a short period. I have not seen any fluid drops on the ground. I will bring the car to the dealership but is there anything I can do besides refilling the fluid again, so I don't have to make tbe trip to the dealership?
  • My bike keeps bogging down at full throttle? 2004 Honda cbr 600rr 41k miles. I was on the highway after work and there were no car so I decided to hit top speed 155. Full throttle it got up to 120 and felt like it was bogging down. When i rolled off the throttle a little it started pulling and got up to 130 then i gave it full throttle again and it started bogging down and losing speed. Its an older bike and i don't really have the money to take it to the shop. Any ideas?
  • Why is my oil level going down so quickly? I have a 2006 Honda crv with about 84k. I have been noticing that it is seeming to go through oil rather quickly. I replace it every 3k. I really don't think there's a leak, but I'm not a mechanic. Just troubleshooting maybe?
  • Why does my car temperature rise when I idle but when i drive it, it's goes back to normal? So I started noticing this problem 2 days ago. I thought I fixed it by refilling the coolant. It was working fine till today again. When I stop on a cross street or I idle, the temperature slowly rises up to the "H" but once I accelerate or move the car, it slowly goes back to normal. My A.c works perfectly either way. What could be the problem? How much would it cost? It's a 2005 Honda civic ex.
