Refrigerant is a gas at ambient temperature. So, you would not have seen freon on the ground. Most likely what you saw on the ground was water (condensation) draining out of the air conditioner. This is normal. I'm not sure what the noise was. Some cars use vacuum to operate the blend doors in the dash.
