Will my car fail the M.O.T if I put my own horn and switch in my car as originally doesn't work All steering wheel controls nonfunctioning?

Hi all… I have a Honda Civic 2009 and all the controls on the steering wheel no longer work I think the clock spring is broken and I think it will be very expensive to get fixed. I don't use the radio controls or the cruse control anyway. So I was thinking about buying and wiring up a horn safety and securely with a a 12v battery And a switch on the dashboard to pass the MOT…
would this be an MOt fail?
Can you have a horn on your dash board or is it compulsory to have it on the steering wheel?
Is a clock spring hard to replace?
Any tips I would really appreciate thanks
Any idea of the cost to have it replaced or should I just wire up a horn?
P.s I've checked all fuses it's not a fuses or relay problem?

It isn't compulsory to have it on the steering wheel - vide all those which have it on a stalk behind the wheel. The horn control must be present, secure and readily accessible to the driver - that's all the regs require. If you do this, make it clear to the MoT tester where the button is, otherwise he'll press the button on the wheel and when he finds it doesn't work will issue a fail.

Personally I'd fix the clock spring, it isn't difficult once you've worked it out. And doubtless there are articles on the net about how to do it. Do make sure the battery is disconnected first. Be careful not to send power through any airbag wiring with a multimeter etc.

You do realize don't you that you're asking if it's ok to take a substantial amount of resale value out of a car to save a relatively small amount?

If the "clock spring" is broken the air bag won't work either. Repair is not all that expensive.

Hi so you have added your own horn. It needs to work as it should.

Yes

  • Does power steering fluid get hot if the car is just running and the steering isn't being used? If the pump is just spinning, recirculating fluid and nothing else… Would it still get hot? I had to bypass the pump from the rack and have the fluid recirculate. Would the pump get hot from just spinning? I know 8th gen Honda's don't have a cooler for the power steering anyways.
  • Why does my 2014 Civic Si have red honda badges on front and back and on steering wheel? I bought a new Honda Civic Si from the dealership and the guy said that it was one of 10,000 models of that year, it looks nice but i want to know how accurate this is. Why does it have red badges? And why does my engine cover look white instead of black like they are on other Si's? Please answer!
  • Steering wheel and brakes got still when I turned the car on? I drive a 2008 Honda Civic with 240k on it, today, I parked my car, put her in park and shut her off. I got back in later on, started her up and put her in reverse. When I tried to back out the steering wheel almost wouldn't move and the brake was the same way. I put her back in park, shut her off, turned her back on and everything was good. I have all new parts on it, or just about, and this is the first time it's happened as far as I know. Any advice on what this could be?
