My car turns over properly but the engine races and won't shift gears?

I have a 2003 Honda CR-V with about 182,000 miles on it. Has been driving perfect until last night when I turned it on and the engine was racing like I was accelerating and I was unable to shift gears. What could be causing this and what kind of repair bill could I be looking at?

Maybe the accelerator cable is sticking? I'm not knowledgable with this stuff though, sorry. It sounds like it could be that though. Have a look under the hood and pull the cable up and release it then start it and see if it does it. But if it is that it would be dangerous because it could get stuck while driving and accelerate on its own. Or maybe the revs are set too high. Not sure, like I said I don't know much about cars. I'd wait to hear from someone more knowledgeable. Oh and make sure it's in neutral when doing that.

Idling that fast could be a few things! It might be the accelerator cable like the other guy said or the throttle body needs to be cleaned or the idle air control sensor needs to be cleaned!

The first thing that comes to mind with a racing idle is an air/vacuum leak or an issue with the idle speed control.
