Engine will start but won't stay on?

I have a small engine, a honda 9.0 gx270, that starts fine, (used for a go kart) and stalls a moment later. I need to know how to fix it, but not sure of the cause. Could it be flooding? I thought a flood made it hard to crank. But it starts right up. Its not the spark plugs, i replace them weekly (i work in a go karting establishment.) it has a fresh air filter. I'm stumped honestly. Any suggestions or recommendations as to what it is and how to fix?

Start by changing the fuel filter and checking for kinked fuel lines.

The symptoms described indicate insufficient fuel, potentially an internal clog in the carburetor. Several different crossdraft float carburetors are used on the GX270 depending on original application; some have a fuel cut-off solenoid (which doubles as the bowl retainer) at the base of the bowl, some a second bowl with a fuel filter. The idle-mixture needle (in models with an adjustment provision) should be at the top of the fuel bowl near the base of the throttle shaft.

Most likely a clogged pilot jet in the carb.
Best to just buy a new one but they can be soaked also.

  • I have a Honda Harmony HRB215 K4 SDA that won't pull start but if I take off the recoil and drill start it, it runs perfect? I have a Honda Harmony HRB215 K4 SDA that won't pull start but if I take off the recoil and drill start it, it runs perfect. I did a compressin test, the pull start only gets the mower to 60psi but the drill gets the mower to 150psi. This mower does have a decompression vale where the ehaust opest about 1/8 of the way. I tore the ead off and checked and cleaned the valves. They don't stick open. Could there be an issue with the decompression valve? Or would it be the piston rings?
