Does a top mount intercooler have to be on top?

I've got a 13b Turbo II Intercooler from an rx7 and I was wondering if it could be side mounted on a honda. I figure I'd just have to custom fit it somewhere but, I wanted some input if it would work like that. It should considering it's just a basically a cooler.

A top mounted intercooler can be side mounted. It is a matter of fabrication of the brackets. Also keep in mind the difference between the two air temperatures affects what the intercooler does and how well it does it. Cool air movement is a must and you don't want the air to exit to the bottom of the car. That is why the RX7 had the hood vent, but it routed air into the engine compartment and out the bottom of the engine bay. This could cause lift at speed. If you do not have cooler air to the external surface of the intercooler- then it becomes a interheater defeating the purpose.

It just won't cool very well. That's why the intercooler on my Dodge diesel is the first item the air hits coming into the engine bay. It is mounted in front of the radiator and trans cooler. If the intercooler is packed into the side of the engine bay, performance will be degraded.
