I bumped a car while parallel parking?

I bumped a car while parallel parking. It was a tight spot so i though i had enough space but i really didn't. The car was not damaged because it was a very light tough. My question is how can i know if a car will fit into the space? I drive a honda civic so i'm wondering how big the space has to be to get in? I have no problem parallel parking but sometimes the parallel parking space confuses me.

Pull up parallel to the parking spot first to see how large the space is in comparison to the vehicle's overall length. The larger the space is, the easier it will be to parallel park. But you will need at least some maneuvering room to be able to get in and out of a spot successfully. How much room you need is up to you. But I would want at least a couple of feet ( 50-60 cm ) on either end so you have sufficient room to get the vehicle in and out relatively quickly and without hitting any other vehicle or property.

Usually there are lines on the street to divide up the spaces and your Civic should fit easily into a designated space. But if not, just stop even with the open space and you should see if your car is going to fit.
