How do I get license plates and registration after purchasing a car from the dealership?
I bought a "certified used" Honda from a honda dealership in North Carolina. They gave me a slip of paper that says 30 day temporary marker receipt and a paper tag. I paid for the tax and tag so I assume they are handling this. But do I need to pay them a visit to pick up my tag? How does this work. It wasn't explained well. Any advice is appreciated. I haven't calle them yet because I want to be a bit more educated so I don't sound stupid when I call.
They should get the tags and will call you when they come in for you to pick up. If it is longer then your 30 day paper tag, just go back and they will issue you another one. At least that has been my experience with car dealerships.
I doubt you'll sound stupid by calling, You probably wouldn't believe the things they hear in just one day.
Usually the tags and registration will be mailed to you, but just call and ask whether the items will come directly to you or if you will be called by the dealership when they receive them. Probably whoever answers the phone there can give you the answer. And they have probably gotten dumber questions than that, and even need to know that they are not fully explaining the process to buyers.
The dealer should submit the registration and plate request for you to your state's DMV offices. If they haven't they are not doing their job. Not sure if they have? Ask 'em!
Call the dealer & ask.
In my state, the dealer has nothing to do with the tag. You take your bill of sale & title app to the DMV and buy your own.
The fees were likely charged to you by the selling dealer at the time of the sale. The dealer remits those fees to YOUR DMV on your behalf, so, No, you don't need to return to the dealership. The title and plates (registration) should be mailed to you. Look at your sales contract. It should show that they charged you all of the title and registration fees.
You won't sound stupid by calling and asking them. That would be a very valid question
- Shoud I buy the motorcycle before or after I get my license and gear? I found an interesting offer on a Honda CB500 from 1993 but I don't have my license nor gear. I'm afraid that if I don't buy it now I might loose it. What do you think? Of course I don't plan on riding with no gear. I'm going to store the motorcycle until it's 100% safe
- Does buying a motorcycle from a private seller w/ registration automatically cancel the registration? I'm selling my Honda Grom to a buyer and was wondering if he buys my bike, will my registration automatically get terminated after I sign the title over? Because a friend told me even if the registration is up to date, it gets terminated after selling it because the new owner will have to register anyways. I ask because my bike registration has been expired since August 2018.
- Install front license plate bracket myself, or at dealership? Cost difference? I know it'll be cheaper to install it myself, but I'm afraid to damage the front bumper since I have to drill holes to attach the bracket. If a dealership does it they'll know exactly how to do it since they do it all the time. It's Honda that I'd be dealing with. I know they're expensive, but would a bracket installation really be that bad through them?
- When do I need an inspection sticker and registration for my new car in Massachusetts by? I just bought a 2014 Honda Civic Ex in Massachusetts today, and there's no inspection sticker or registration. There's an oil change sticker on it. I tried calling the car dealer but he didn't return my call yet. Will I get in trouble if I drive it to work tomorrow? I work in New Hampshire, by the way.
