How to derestrict a 1984 Honda MTX 50?
I recently acquired a 1984 Honda MTX 50 (the uk model) and I've been told it's restricted to 35mph, just wondering is there a way to derestrict it? Wouldn't be surprised if there isn't? Also a few issues which I can't work out how to sort, like the low beam not working and the horn not working, anything would be much appreciated.
Big bore it. Frist thing that came to mind
Your bike is about to go to the junkyard. Just make it run. You want a faster bike, get a newer one with a bigger displacement.
The Honda MB5 - which had the same motor as the MTX - was restricted in the ignition from memory - it's been a while. You can try MB5 owner's forums for tuning advice but as I recall Honda did a very good job in limiting the opportunity for back-yard fettling. The best speed boost for these bikes back in the day came from fitting a motor etc. From an H100 and hope the cops didn't work out why a 30mph-restricted 50cc was doing twice that speed. As the bike is ~35yo I don't think you will find much in the way of aftermarket support. If your bike is in good condition, these mopeds are starting to fetch silly money, and you'd probably retain value better if it's not stuffed around with too much. Just enjoy it for what it is - a rare cool little bike.
Tom, this is probably too late. I had an MT50 in 80's. Restriction was in the exhaust expansion chamber and you have to slice the input tube by cutting through where the taper begins and there is about 6- 8 inches penetration that has to be removed. I think there was more in the tail pipe, but my memory is not that good. The head has two castings that prevent the reed valves being opened up. I ground these out and bent the reed valve backstops back slightly. The input port was widened slightly around the circumference. I never rejetted the carb. Just put it all back together.
Continued… The MT50 would max out at 30mph with two people up a hill with no loss of power. The guy, I sold it to rejetted the carb and was getting 55mph ( at least that's what he said and I can't confirm, but I suspect the carb was restricted as well as the air flow by a plate in the air cleaner if I remember well. It turned out to be a much better bike than people thought as the popular choice was the DT50 and FS50; I was pretty happy with the results and it was fun to use.

- Transmission on 1984 Honda Shadow 700? Alright I just bought the bike about a week ago, for my first bike. Now when I'm riding and shifting from 1st to 2nd the bike sometimes goes into neutral. Is this a problem i will have to address with the bike or is this just a beginner mistake? The engine runs great, I want to keep it that way

- How many digits in my 1984 honda magna vin #? I went to get mike bike registered and the dmv tells me my vin# is wrong. Here is my dilemma: There are 14 obvious digits in the vin and before it there are 3 lower case letters. I brought them all 17 digits because i thought i had to have 17. Is it possible i only need 14 digits for this bike?
