1978 Honda Cb400, 18,000 miles?
I ran across a 1978 Honda cb400hawk with 18,000 miles for about $1800. I have yet to go see it, but the craigslist post states it's in excellent shape. My question is though, is 18,000 miles for a 37year old bike too low? That's about 500 miles a year? I don't know much about bikes. Is it worth the buy if it's truly in excellent shape?
" the craigslist post states it's in excellent shape" / "I don't know much about bikes"
those are at least 2 reasons why you need to have someone with you that DOES know about cycles AND have a mechanic inspect it before purchase… Otherwise you are taking a gamble
It is an old bike - old enough that you will have a difficult time finding parts or even getting a shop to work on any issues that may and will arise - they just don't work on older bikes due to parts availability. Since you don't know much about bikes I would assume that means you don't know much about working on bikes. Either way unless this bike model/yr pulls at your heartstrings (ie a bike you had in your younger years or always wanted due to styling) then pass and look for a good used bike from at least this millennium. Fuel injection disk brakes, monoshock rear suspension - all around- just fantastic improvements since the 70s.
For $1800 it should be in showroom condition with new tires, chain, sprockets, perfect paint, and seat.
It is pretty much exactly the top end of the NADA book value for that bike.
Twin with kickstarter? I want it.
The Hondamatics are a great beginner bike, easy to learn to ride. They are extremely reliable, easy to work on, and parts are available. 18000 miles is not an issue, However, $1800 is too high unless its perfect. Those bikes don't bring much money. One of my friends bought one a few months ago for $300 in very good condition, needing only a front tire. I usually see them in the $800-$1000 range.
It may have been babied, stored, etc, to keep the mileage so low.
You need to see it.
18000 miles I would check for oil leek between cylinders Some of these type motors would were out the cam chain if you ride them very hard and wear a hole in the front in cylinders
- Would you purchase a 2004 Honda pilot for $6,000.000 that has 216,000 miles on it? I'm just browsing online looking at cars for sale and a lot of them have 200k or more miles on them and they want $4,000 or more. Why do people sale their cars for such a high price with a lot of miles on them? Its not just Hondas its all types of cars private and dealers as well
- 2008 Honda Fit with 66,000 miles on it for $5,000? Is this a good deal? I need to buy a new car and today I got an offer on a 2008 Honda Fit with 66,000 miles on it for $5,000. I'm a 19 year old girl and I know nothing about cars D: Are Honda Fits good cars? Should I buy this with so many miles already on it? Also, I like to travel. Will this car be safe to drive long distances?
- 2012 Honda Civic needs a oil change at 10,000. But I want to drive more than 10,000 to save money? How many MORE miles can I drive while it's still safe for the engine to do so? The oil is synthetic blend. oil change every 5000 miles is very expensive and I'm a lower class. It would be better if I go over the limit.
- Is 300,000 miles on a 1998 Honda accord bad? I'm trying to buy a car and found one with 300,000 miles on it for $3,200, but i have been told that it isn't worth it.
