1982 Honda nighthawk problems?
I just got a nighthawk. I was going down the road and the bike just spuddered down and came to a stop. Its turning over but its not fireing. Fuel line is good. And we're getting spark. Any ideas?
'Fuel line is fine'… Is any of that fuel reaching the cylinders?
(your bike isn't a rocket so we're not talking rocket-science here).
Silly question, but is the fuel switch sent to "ON" or "RUN"? I know that bike has a fuel turn off. I actually had an '85 nighthawk in my MSF training course and was yellin at the instructor "It ran out of gas!" when it sputtered and died. He just looked at me and went "Did you remember your start up procedure?" Took me a few seconds, flipped the fuel switch to ON, turned over a few times and fired right up.
I mean, in the combustion triangle of logic: Fuel, Air, Ignition.
In that bike, the fuel and air are mixed together using a carb and then pressurized using the cyclinder/piston. That pressure applied to the mixture makes it the optimal parameters for combustion. Spark plug fires, boom, turns over and repeats the process.
So, you are failing somewhere in that triangle. If you have spark, then obviously it is your fuel/air mixture that is the problem. Since it is an older bike, the carbs are the first place to look to make sure it is not all gummed up.
However, an even easier "first step" just to rule out things with little to no actual investigation, is making sure you are operating the vehicle properly. Things like putting it in neutral, raising the kick stand, making sure the fuel switch is toggled to ON, using the choke (however much is needed) properly, etc.
After all of that fails, then you look into what is actually the problem.
Is fuel tank close to full or near empty? Put petcock in reserve position, see if that helps. Might have some crud in tank, might have fouled fuel filter, might have crud fouling carb- depends some on what was in tank when you got the cycle- you did post that you just got it, Did you get a manual? Other possibility- fuel cap vent may be clogged, has been known to happen- take off fuel cap and see if it starts then, your symptom of running then died is a possible indication of fuel cap or California emission vent blockage.
- Why won't my 1982 honda magna idle? It runs good riding it but it just won't idle. I have to hold it at 3000rpm to idle. It set for years
- What's a vintage honda 1982 cr 250r worth? I just bought a barn find original 82 cr250r. Bikes in overall good shape for its age. Starts first kick and runs great. All the cosmetics are In good shape except for a small tear in seat. I'm just curious to know what a bike like this sells for. Thanks for looking!
- Upgrading from honda nighthawk to honda fury? So I have a honda nighthawk 250 and I've been riding for 3 years so I'm comfortable riding but would a honda fury be to much more bike than I'm use too
- Is a 1982 Honda cb450 Nighthawk a good bike? I'm looking at a 1982 Honda CB450SC Nighthawk. This is my first bike. There are 26K miles on this bike and the dealer wants $1375 for it. Kelley Blue Book said this bike is worth $1175. I ran a vehicle history report and found nothing wrong. Should I buy it? How much should I pay?
