Dirt bike transportation?
I have a 2005 Ford Explorer with a class 2 hitch that has a 1 1/4 receiver, and a Honda crf450R. I want to transport my bike but all hitch mounts for bikes are make for class 3 hitches with 2 inch receivers. I bought a 1 1/4 to 2 inch adapter, would the class 3 hitch work for me as long as I remember I can't carry as much as a class 3 hitch?
It should.
Option: Remove your hitch, buy and install a class III/IV hitch: http://www.hiddenhitch.com/fit-guides/all-in-one-selector -- then you can add a motorcycle rack.
For a cheaper option: Get a Harbor Freight trailer -- http://www.harborfreight.com/1195-lb-capacity-48-in-x-96-in-heavy-duty-folding-trailer-62648.html -- 4x8 plywood floor, chock, straps, etc. Trailer is handy for lots a things, and only takes a 2'x5' space beside the garage.
What is the max tongue weight that hitch is rated for vs. The weight of the mount + bike? Also factor in some margin for the fact that the adapter is adding leverage to the load and concentrating any torque into a smaller receiver. My guess is you don't have the capacity for it without upgrading the hitch.
