How do the break-in process applies to re-bored 100cc engine?
I recently rebored my 75000km done hero honda cd dawn for the 1st time. New bore is 0.25 and new rod and piston and rings! How do I ride this bike to get the optimal performance?
please give me every expert and real life based ideas to break-in my engine!
1. Do not ask for maximum power for at least 500 miles (800kms)
2. Change the oil and filter the same miles as above
3. Use minimum revs possible at the start and build up a little at a time over the 500 miles until you are just using the full rev range at 500 miles
4. For first 500 miles avoid travelling at a constant engine speed and vary the revs a little as you cruise along
Years ago they weren't able to make piston rings as precise as they can today. So you'd install rings in an engine and the first few hundred miles or km would actually be the last part of their machining process, as the soft iron of the rings wore against the much harder steel of the cylinder bore until they matched perfectly and sealed. So you'd take it easy on an engine during that time, try not to overheat it, which would harden the rings so they wouldn't wear in properly. And after the break-in period you'd change your oil and it would be full of iron filings from the rings wearing in.
These days they make the rings more accurate to begin with so the break-in is not as important as it once was. But it's not a bad idea to take it easy on the engine for the first few hundred miles or km. Usually they recommend staying below a certain RPM during this time (depending on the engine) but it really means not to cruise at this high RPM for long periods of time.
And I'm told it's a good idea to not go one speed too long, to vary the speeds. I'm not sure why, but my dad told me that and he knew all about this stuff.
And we still change the oil after the break-in period because it's relatively cheap and probably not a bad idea.
First, you need to apply near full power for short periods, followed by deceleration lasting twice as long as accleration- 10 seconds on the throttle, 20 seconds decelerating. Do this several times after you warm up the engine. Most easily done on open road in a higher gear.
You do it to seat the rings. You don't have to baby it, except for the first few minutes until its warmed to operating temp. If you are too gentle on it, the cylinder bore can be 'glazed' and the rings won't properly seat/seal.
After 20 minutes of this, ride as normal.
Remember, you aren't breaking in a new engine, just seating the rings.
For the next 800km keep speed below 50 kmph
vary the engine speed from 45 to 50 kmph
do not run bike at constant speeds
keep rpm below 4500
at 200km 400km 600km and 800km change engine oil
after 800km and upto 1600km keep rpm below 7000
same procedure
change engine oil at 1000km then 1600km
now engine is ready to be used at any speed
