I've got a Honda Motorcycle question?

I picked up a really cool 1979 Honda CM400t recently but found that it aint got spark, it has a kickstart and I got ahold of a manual for it and was reading that it doesn't have a magneto. Would my motorcycle with a CDI need battery for spark? EVEN with a kickstart? I had just always thought you didn't need a battery for kickstart, but it has electric start too. Any answer appreciated!

You need a battery.

It needs a battery. Look at a manual online.

It Doesn't have CDI; it has an Igniter., It has an Alternator, Not a mag.

And, Yes, even kickers, it need 12.6 volts to start. So, a Battery.

The regulator needs that voltage to beat against and provide current to the stator's boost winding to provide Anything. Solid state circuits do not work with out a source of voltage.

You May get by with a big 5 Farad cap, like Lowriders use, in place of the battery. Old Brit bikes did this
